"Ten rooms inside an 1832 mayor's mansion that has been taken back to its bones and quietly modernised. The cocktail room downstairs is the best in town. Sleep here if you want the only address in central Ithaca that feels properly hotel-grade rather than chain-grade."

The Hotel

The Argos Inn occupies a Greek Revival mansion built in 1832 for Henry W. Sage that has worn several civic hats over the last two centuries, mayoral residence, briefly the world headquarters of Duncan Hines, a graduate fraternity, and finally, after a four-year studs-out restoration that completed in 2013, the most architecturally serious boutique hotel in central Ithaca. The current owners (a local family with a parallel restaurant business) commissioned a LEED-certified rebuild that preserved the wide-plank pine floors, the carved walnut staircase, and the original plaster cornices while bringing the entire envelope up to current performance standards.

The ten guest rooms are arranged across the upper two floors and run from a snug single (well-priced, north-facing, around 18 square metres) through to a corner suite with a sitting room and a working fireplace in the original master. Every room has its own private bath; select rooms feature heated stone slab floors in the bathroom, deep soaking tubs, and the original sash windows refitted with proper glazing. The interior signature is restrained, neutral linen, dark walnut, brass picture lights, and the kind of bed product (Frette linens, custom mattresses) that pulls the property into a different category from anything else inside the city limits. Geothermal heating and cooling runs throughout, the property is acoustically isolated room-to-room, and the WiFi is genuinely fast.

The Bar at Argos is a serious operation in its own right, occupying the original front parlour and side library, with a long pewter bar, leather booths, and a cocktail programme that draws drinkers from across the regional wine community. The list runs about twelve house cocktails (refreshed seasonally), an unusually deep amaro selection, and a tight bench of local Finger Lakes wines by the glass. Light bar food runs to small plates and a charcuterie board through the evening; this is not a restaurant by stay-here standards, but it is one of the best places in Ithaca to start or end a night.

Breakfast is a proper plated affair served in the morning dining room, generous, locally sourced, and quietly excellent. The property does not run a spa or fitness centre (the room count does not support either), but the owners maintain a partnership with two nearby studios for guests who want yoga or a workout. The Commons, Cornell, Cayuga Lake's southern shore, and the Ithaca Farmers Market are all under fifteen minutes on foot. Service is small-staff, attentive, and informal in the New England innkeeping tradition. The property is consistently the highest-rated hotel inside Ithaca city limits.

Best Occasion Fit

Solo Retreat

For a Finger Lakes solo weekend that wants the city rather than the country, the Argos is the precise booking. The ten-room scale guarantees a quiet stay, the bar downstairs is the kind of place a single traveller can read a book at without feeling watched, and the central Ithaca position puts the Commons, Cornell, and the gorge trails inside fifteen minutes on foot. The single room at the back is sized correctly and priced correctly for a solo midweek stay.

Anniversary

An Argos anniversary works best when it leans into the property's compactness rather than against it. Book the Library Suite with the working fireplace, a corner booth in the bar for an aperitif, and an early dinner reservation at one of the Restaurant Row addresses three blocks west. The hotel will hold a champagne setup in the room with twenty-four hours' notice.

Business

For Cornell-adjacent business travel, the Argos is the more discerning alternative to the Statler. The WiFi is fast, the rooms are quiet, the central position cuts the campus run to ten minutes by car, and the bar is the right kind of room for a low-key dinner with a colleague or a contact. The kitchen will plate a working breakfast in the dining room from 7 AM on request.
