The Inns of Aurora, the five-property heritage resort on the east shore of Cayuga Lake in the Finger Lakes

The Inns of Aurora

The Inns of Aurora is a single resort spread across five historic houses on Main Street in Aurora, New York, on the eastern shore of Cayuga Lake. Pleasant Rowland (the American Girl founder and an Aurora native) restored the Aurora Inn (1833), the E.B. Morgan House (1858), the Rowland House (1903), Wallcourt Hall, and the Farmhouse over the course of two decades, knitting them into a single 55-room property on 350 acres of working lakeshore. The result is the only Finger Lakes hotel that reads as a proper integrated village resort rather than a single building.

The Hotel

The five-house model is the property's defining choice and the source of its character. The Aurora Inn is the central building, an 1833 Federal-style hotel directly on the lake with a wraparound porch and the Taverna restaurant on the ground floor; the E.B. Morgan House is the heritage suite product, seven oversized rooms in an 1858 Italianate mansion two blocks south; the Rowland House is the contemporary boutique inn, seven rooms with the most up-to-date design in the property; Wallcourt Hall houses 17 rooms with bolder colour and contemporary art; the Farmhouse offers ten quieter rooms on the resort's working acreage. Walking between buildings on Main Street is the rhythm of a stay, with all check-in and concierge functions consolidated at 378 Main Street.

Room product varies meaningfully by house. The Aurora Inn rooms are the most traditional: oak floors, four-poster beds, claw-foot tubs, lake views from the upper categories. The E.B. Morgan House rooms are the largest at 40 to 55 square metres and the most heritage in feel, with original mouldings and oversized bathrooms. The Rowland House and Wallcourt Hall lean contemporary: Pratt & Lambert paint, custom rugs, locally fabricated furniture, and the strongest art programme in the resort. The Farmhouse is the quietest house and the best choice for a guest who wants distance from the village street.

Taverna at the Aurora Inn is the main dining room and runs a Mediterranean-leaning menu with regional produce under an executive chef hired out of New York City; 1833 Kitchen & Bar is the more casual room for lunch and a lighter dinner. Both rooms book up a week or more ahead on summer weekends. The wine list leans Finger Lakes with a serious Italian and Burgundy section; the cocktail programme is among the better hotel programmes in upstate New York.

The spa is a dedicated standalone building on the lakefront with hydrotherapy, hammam, sauna, steam, and an outdoor relaxation deck onto Cayuga Lake; it is smaller than Mirbeau's Aquaterra spa but more directly integrated with the water. The 350-acre estate runs a working farm programme that supplies the restaurants, a series of walking trails, a private beach and dock, kayaks and paddleboards, and an in-resort van for visits to MacKenzie-Childs (the design and ceramics company is headquartered two miles north and is a near-essential stop for guests).

Best Occasion Fit

Anniversary

For an East Coast anniversary at a property that reads as a small village rather than a single hotel, the Inns of Aurora is the genuine alternative to the Lake House on Canandaigua. Book an E.B. Morgan House suite for a milestone year and the Rowland House for a contemporary read; add a tasting at Taverna and a sunset on the lakeshore deck.

Wellness Retreat

The lakefront spa, the 350-acre estate with marked walking trails, and the property's wellness package architecture make this a quietly serious retreat booking. Pair the spa with a structured three-night programme of farm walks, lake swimming, and dining at the property's vegetable-forward kitchen.

Honeymoon

For a quiet Northeast honeymoon that does not require a flight, the Inns of Aurora offers a five-house resort with a private beach, a Michelin Guide kitchen, and the rare combination of heritage and operational polish. The Rowland House contemporary suites are the right scale for a four- or five-night stay.
