"You arrive at a private dock on East Sound, walk up to a five-storey Craftsman mansion in cedar and stone, and find an original Aeolian organ that still plays on Saturday afternoons. Rosario is the closest the San Juan Islands come to a European spa hotel of the old school."

The Hotel

Rosario sits at the head of East Sound, on the east shore of Orcas Island, a forty minute drive from the Orcas ferry landing or a fifteen minute floatplane from Seattle. The site is the former private estate of Robert Moran, the shipbuilder and former Seattle mayor who moved to the islands in 1905 on his physician's advice and, between 1906 and 1909, built a five storey Arts and Crafts house out of timber and stone quarried on his own land. He gifted most of the surrounding holdings (nearly 5,000 acres) to Washington state, which became Moran State Park, and kept the mansion and immediate gardens as a private residence. The property has operated as a resort since 1960 and runs today as Rosario Resort.

The accommodation is split across the historic mansion and a series of contemporary lodgings on the thirty waterfront acres. There are no guest rooms in the mansion itself, which is preserved as a public museum, dining room, bar, and event venue. The 107 guest rooms run across three waterside buildings: the Bayside (closest to the marina), the Hillside (set back into the slope with valley views), and the Round House and Cliff House suites at the water's edge. Room finishes are unfussy Pacific Northwest contemporary, not period; most categories have a private balcony or terrace, and the higher categories include gas fireplaces and full kitchens.

The mansion is where the property still does its real cultural work. The music room holds a 1913 two storey Aeolian organ with over 1,900 pipes and a 1900 Steinway grand piano, and a resident musician runs a weekly Saturday afternoon recital, in costume, that runs ninety minutes and is one of the genuinely distinctive things to do in the San Juans. The dining room serves a Pacific Northwest dinner with original mahogany panelling intact, and the small museum on the upper floor traces the Moran family's history with the property.

The wellness footprint is the resort's other defining note. There is a full spa with hydrotherapy, an indoor heated saltwater pool in the mansion solarium, two outdoor pools at the waterside, a small fitness centre, and a marina with kayak, paddleboard, and sailing rental. Moran State Park, with twenty four miles of hiking and the summit of Mount Constitution at 2,409 feet (the highest point in the San Juans), starts at the resort's back gate. The combination of historic mansion, waterfront rooms, and immediate hiking access is unique on the islands.

Best Occasion Fit

Anniversary

An anniversary at Rosario is a measured, properly Pacific Northwest choice. Book a Cliff House suite for the water view, time the visit for a Saturday so you catch the organ recital in the mansion, and reserve the main dining room for a window table. The property handles milestones with the warmth of a long established resort rather than a marketing brochure.

Honeymoon

For a Pacific Northwest honeymoon at the historic end of the stock, Rosario is the most interesting San Juan booking. The mansion atmosphere, the marina, the access to Moran State Park, and the fifteen minute floatplane from Seattle make it the rare resort that delivers both seclusion and a sense of cultural depth. Book a Bayside suite with a balcony and ask the spa to handle massages in room.

Wellness Retreat

The wellness operation here is unusually complete for an islands property. The mansion solarium pool, the full spa, the marina activities, and the hiking immediately above the resort combine to deliver a structured week without leaving the gate. The pace is slow rather than program-driven, which suits the property and the location.
