"It is the rare property where the same gate gives you a high-thread-count adults-only lodge, a canvas glamping tent on a wooden platform over a lake, and a forty dollar drive-in campsite, and they all operate to the same standard."

The Hotel

Lakedale sits on Roche Harbor Road about four and a half miles north of Friday Harbor and the same distance south of Roche Harbor, on 82 wooded acres with three small spring-fed lakes. The site was developed in the 1980s by the same family that still owns it, and the operating philosophy is to keep multiple price points on the same property, run them all with the same standard of housekeeping and warmth, and let guests pick the format that suits the trip.

The adults-only Lodge is the property's headline product: ten rooms with king beds, gas fires, soaking tubs, and lake-side decks. Service in the Lodge runs as a small luxury inn rather than a campground office, with a daily continental breakfast in the great room, evening wine, and direct access to the lakes for early morning swims. The Lodge is the booking for couples and the answer to the question of where to stay on San Juan Island when you want quiet rather than village.

Beyond the Lodge the property holds four log cabins (one and two bedroom, sleeping up to six), twelve canvas cabins on wooden platforms with proper beds and electricity (glamping done right, not light camping), four yurts at the newly opened yurt village, twelve RV sites with full hookups, and a tent campground with thirty five sites. Lakedale Lake House, a private four-bedroom home on the south lake, books out for multigenerational families and small group celebrations. The mix is deliberate and gives groups with mixed expectations a way to be on the same property.

Activities run on the lakes and across the acreage. Guests have free use of canoes, kayaks, paddleboards, and rowboats; the south lake is fishable; trout stocking keeps it interesting. There is a small general store at the lodge for provisions and a daily fire pit at sunset. The property is twenty minutes from Lime Kiln Point State Park (the best shore-based whale viewing on the West Coast) and the same distance from Roche Harbor's village and the Friday Harbor ferry. The combination is unusual on the San Juans: a self-contained, multi-format resort with the village amenities a short drive away.

Best Occasion Fit

Solo Retreat

For a solo trip on San Juan Island, the Lodge is the cleanest booking on the property. The adults-only setting, lake access, and small scale (ten rooms) deliver the quiet without the awkwardness; the continental breakfast and evening wine handle the structured social moments without overcommitting. A long weekend with a book on the deck, a morning kayak, and dinner in Roche Harbor is the standard itinerary.

Family Holiday

Few Pacific Northwest properties handle families across budgets as gracefully as Lakedale. A two bedroom log cabin sleeps a family of six with a deck and a fire pit; the canvas cabins are a different (and properly fun) format for teenagers; the lake activities are free and unsupervised in the easy way that has largely vanished elsewhere. Multigenerational groups often book the Lake House plus a cabin.

Wellness Retreat

The property is unusually well suited to a low-key wellness week. Three lakes for morning swims; canoe and kayak access; quiet wooded paths; a tent or canvas-cabin sleep that resets sleep architecture. There is no formal spa programme, which is the point; bring the structure you want and let the property handle the calm.
