"It is the village bed and breakfast that does not feel like a bed and breakfast. The Victorian bones are intact, the gourmet breakfast is properly cooked, and the cottages let couples opt out of the shared dining room when they want to."

The Hotel

Tucker House sits on C Street, two blocks uphill from the Friday Harbor ferry landing and a block from the Spring Street commercial row, in the village's small heritage residential district. The original Tucker House was an 1898 Queen Anne Victorian built by John A. Tucker; the inn has expanded over the years to include a second restored Victorian (the Harrison House Suites) and two private cottages on the same block. The current ownership purchased the property in 2006 and has run it as a serious small inn rather than a casual rooming house.

There are 18 units across the four buildings. The historic rooms in Tucker House and Harrison House (named for the gardens, the era, and the original families) are properly Victorian in feel without the museum-piece quality that often comes with the format. Most have private en suite bathrooms, jetted tubs, gas fires, and the kind of antique furnishings that have been chosen rather than inherited at random. The two cottages (Lizzy's Cottage and the Garden Cottage) are private one-bedroom units with kitchens, private decks, and their own entries, and are the booking for couples who want bed and breakfast atmosphere without the shared dining room.

Breakfast is the property's daily set piece. A hot, multi-course menu is served in the Tucker House dining room from 8 to 9:30 each morning, with the kitchen sourcing seasonally from San Juan Island farms and an emphasis on the kind of slow, proper cooking that has largely disappeared from chain hotel breakfast service. Guests in the cottages can take breakfast in their cottage or join the main dining room. Evening wine and cheese is set out in the Tucker House parlour daily.

Tucker House is the San Juan booking for travellers who want the village's residential heart rather than the harbor commercial row. The two block walk to the ferry, the Whale Museum, and the main Spring Street dining is short and pleasant; the inn handles whale watching, kayak, and bicycle bookings on guests' behalf. Returning guests receive 15 percent off their room rate, and the property repeats heavily from year to year for that reason. The combination of Victorian setting, proper breakfast, and small scale (18 units across four buildings) makes this the highest-rated small inn in Friday Harbor.

Best Occasion Fit

Anniversary

An anniversary at Tucker House is the village's quietest, most personal booking. The Victorian rooms, the jetted tub categories, and the hot breakfast in the original 1898 dining room handle the celebration without anyone making a fuss about it. Book a Tucker House jetted tub room for the milestone year and Lizzy's Cottage for total privacy.

Honeymoon

For a Pacific Northwest honeymoon at the bed and breakfast end of the village stock, Tucker House is the right small property. The cottages let a couple opt out of the shared breakfast, the Victorian rooms in the main house give the proper bed and breakfast format, and the location handles the entire trip on foot. Book the Garden Cottage for total privacy or a Harrison House suite for the heritage option.

Solo Retreat

Solo travellers tend to underuse bed and breakfasts because of the social pressure of the shared dining room. Tucker House handles solo guests well: the breakfast is set up to accommodate single tables, the parlour is a quiet evening room, and the staff is unobtrusive. Book a Harrison House jetted tub suite for the quiet weekend with a book.
