AC Hotel Greenville Downtown

Marriott's 197 room AC Hotel on South Main, an eight story 2020 build with a Spanish-rooted European design vocabulary and Juniper, the rooftop bar that consistently runs as one of downtown Greenville's most reserved tables.

"If the Westin is the historic Greenville hotel and the Bohemian is the new luxury hotel, AC is the design hotel; the room product is the cleanest contemporary stock in downtown, the rooftop bar is the only one in town with a real evening crowd, and the price is the most defensible in the segment."

The Hotel

AC Hotel Greenville Downtown opened in 2020 inside an eight story new build on the southern half of South Main Street, the section of Greenville's spine that was redeveloped over the previous decade with the Grand Bohemian (rank one) and a string of mid-market towers. AC Hotels is Marriott's European design brand, founded by the Spanish hotelier Antonio Catalan and acquired by Marriott in 2011, and the Greenville property is the South Carolina expression of a brand vocabulary built around clean lines, dark wood, calm colour fields, and an espresso-bar lobby treatment that reads more Barcelona than Bentonville. The hotel quickly became the room of choice for the city's design conscious traveller and the corporate market that wanted a non-grand hotel.

The 197 rooms occupy floors two through eight, with a mix of king and double queens at 28 to 32 square metres, a smaller number of premium kings and corner kings, and a handful of AC Suites on the top floors. The design language is the brand's house style: dark walnut, charcoal and oat upholstery, brass accents, deep linen-clad headboards, a separate work zone, a generous bathroom in marble and matte black hardware. Premium kings on the south face add a small Juliet balcony and the cleanest line of sight to the Camperdown block. The room product is, top to bottom, the most contemporary stock in downtown Greenville.

Food and beverage is the property's loudest gesture, in the literal sense. Juniper, the rooftop bar, runs nightly with a small wood fire and an unrivalled downtown skyline; the room is consistently the hardest reservation in Greenville on a Friday and Saturday and the place the city's bachelor and bachelorette parties book by default. AC Kitchen on the ground floor serves the brand's signature European breakfast (croissant, jamon, cheese, soft eggs) and turns over to a tapas-leaning dinner programme; the AC Lounge bar is a quieter alternative when Juniper is loud. There is a small fitness centre but no spa; the brand keeps its wellness offer deliberately minimal.

Service is solid but the property runs at high occupancy and the elevator banks can read busy at peak hours; the housekeeping team has a strong reputation locally. The location is the second-best in downtown Greenville behind the Bohemian: South Main has more restaurant openings each year than any other block in the upstate and the Camperdown plaza next door has become the city's quiet outdoor performance space. AC Hotel is the editorial first pick for any traveller who wants a clean, contemporary downtown room without the historic dressing of the Westin or the price premium of the Bohemian, and the obvious booking for a design-leaning anniversary or a small bachelor or bachelorette weekend that wants Juniper at the centre of the calendar.

Best Occasion Fit

Business

For a business stay in downtown Greenville at the right price point, AC Hotel is the clear booking. The room product is contemporary and quiet, the work zone is the most usable of any hotel in the city, the AC Lounge handles a one drink client meeting cleanly, and the meeting floor is competent for groups up to 60. Premium Kings on the south face are the right room category.

Anniversary

For a downtown anniversary at the contemporary end of the Greenville stock, the AC is the booking that lets the weekend run on Juniper and South Main without any historic dressing. Book a Premium King for the small balcony onto Camperdown and the rooftop reservation for sunset; AC Kitchen handles the morning. The property is the obvious counterweight to the Westin for a couple that prefers contemporary over heritage.

Bachelor/Bachelorette

For a small bachelor or bachelorette weekend that wants the rooftop bar at the centre of the calendar, AC is the only sensible downtown booking. Juniper handles the headline night, AC Lounge handles the late drink, and the Camperdown block is fifteen seconds out the door for the dinner reservation that the rest of the weekend will be planned around. Block five to ten rooms on the same floor for the group.
