The Westin Poinsett, Greenville

A twelve-storey Beaux-Arts landmark hotel built in 1925 on the central block of Greenville's Main Street, returned to operation as a Westin in 2000 after a meticulous restoration, and held to a serious operational standard since. The historic anchor of downtown Greenville.

The Hotel

The Westin Poinsett occupies a full block on the southern half of Main Street at the corner of West Court Street, two blocks south of the Hyatt Regency and three blocks north of Falls Park. The building (designed by architects W.L. Stoddart and opened on June 1, 1925) is the surviving Beaux-Arts grand hotel of upstate South Carolina, a twelve-storey limestone-and-brick frame with the original two-storey grand lobby intact, the marble registration desk restored, and the historic ballroom (the Gold Ballroom) returned to its 1925 specification. The hotel sat empty from 1987 to 2000 and was bought back from demolition by the late developer Steve Dopp in the late 1990s; the 2000 reopening under Westin's flag is the reason the building still stands.

The 200 rooms run across 12 floors in a wide range of categories from a standard double through the corner Presidential Suite on the twelfth floor. Standard rooms are around 28 to 33 square metres, with the historic-build constraint of irregular floorplates (no two rooms are identical), high ceilings, and large operable windows over Main Street. The Westin product layer adds the Heavenly Bed across all categories, Heavenly Bath fittings, in-room coffee, and a 49-inch flat panel. The corner deluxe rooms on the higher floors are the editorial picks: they get the dual exposure (Main Street and Court Street), the original cornice detailing in the ceiling, and the best of the downtown skyline view.

Public spaces are the property's defining feature. The Spencer's Lobby Bar runs from late morning through midnight in the original main-floor lounge; the Greenwich on Main restaurant operates on the ground floor with a wood-and-brass dining room and an unusually disciplined Southern-American menu. The hotel has its own street-front Starbucks (a Westin operational decision) and a small but serious WestinWORKOUT fitness centre on the second floor. There is no swimming pool. Meeting and event capacity is significant: the restored Gold Ballroom on the second floor seats 280 for a banquet and is the city's most architecturally serious event room, regularly used for weddings, the Greenville Symphony fundraising gala, and Furman University functions.

Service is the long-tenured front-of-house operation that defines a properly-run historic hotel: the bell team has worked the building for decades, the concierge holds the city corporate-stay account from BMW, Michelin, and the GSP corridor cold, and the housekeeping standard is held high. The walk to the Peace Center is two blocks; to Falls Park, four; to Fluor Field (the minor-league baseball stadium), twelve. The Westin Poinsett is the corporate-booking default in Greenville for a reason, and for an anniversary that wants Main Street, ballroom-grade architecture, and the 1925 sense of occasion, it is the historic counterpoint to the new-build Bohemian one block north.

Best Occasion Fit

Business

For corporate stays in Greenville tied to the BMW Spartanburg plant, Michelin North America, the GSP airport corridor, or any Main Street function, the Westin Poinsett is the default booking and has been since 2000. The location two blocks from the Peace Center matters for any event-tied trip; the meeting and ballroom inventory carries the conference; the long-tenured bell and concierge team handle the corporate desk reliably; and Westin's Heavenly Bed remains the right product after a 7:00 AM flight from anywhere on the east coast.

Anniversary

For an anniversary in Greenville with a historic-architecture preference (rather than the new-build contemporary brief that points to the Bohemian), the Westin Poinsett is the choice. Book a corner deluxe on the tenth or twelfth floor for the dual exposure and the cornice detail, take dinner at Greenwich on Main, and finish with a nightcap in Spencer's Lobby Bar; the 1925 Beaux-Arts sense of occasion is the operating note that the property carries better than anywhere else in the upstate.
