Oceanfront at Port Royal Plantation. The big, dependable Hilton Head family resort — beach, pools, spa, and three golf courses out the back gate.
"The most complete oceanfront resort on Hilton Head proper. 412 rooms, three pools, a Heavenly Spa, and the gates of Port Royal's three golf courses out the back. Not the most stylish hotel on the island. Easily the most useful."
The Westin Hilton Head Island Resort & Spa sits at 2 Grasslawn Avenue inside Port Royal Plantation, on a stretch of Atlantic beach that is consistently ranked among the finest on the eastern seaboard. The location is the entire argument. Port Royal is the gated, residential plantation at the northern shoulder of the island, which means the Westin opens directly onto a wide, soft, low-trafficked beach with no through-traffic, no public access points within walking distance, and no visible neighbouring high-rises. Guests cross from the lobby to the sand without leaving resort grounds. For a family resort, this is the ideal frame.
There are 412 rooms and suites across the main hotel block — a U-shaped, eight-storey building from the early 1990s that was renovated most recently in 2017–2018. Standard rooms are functional, generously sized by Hilton Head standards, and arranged so that the majority face either the Atlantic or the central pool deck. Pay for an oceanfront room. The view, the morning sound of the surf, and the balcony breakfast with coffee are the difference between a perfectly good Westin stay and the version of the Westin that families return to year after year. The signature Heavenly Bed — Westin's branded mattress system — does, in fact, deliver on its name.
The property runs three pools — a heated indoor pool, a main outdoor pool with a separate kids' splash zone, and an adults-only pool reserved for guests over sixteen. Splash Beach Bar, perched between the main pool and the dunes, is the de facto centre of resort life from May through September: frozen drinks, casual lunch, and a steady, well-managed parade of kids in goggles. The Carolina Room is the resort's signature evening restaurant — coastal Lowcountry cooking with a serious wine programme, dressy without being stiff, and one of the better hotel restaurants on the island. The Ocean Lounge handles the in-between hours: light bites, sunset cocktails, live music a few nights a week.
Heavenly Spa by Westin is the wellness anchor — a full-service oceanfront spa with eleven treatment rooms, a relaxation lounge facing the dunes, and a treatment menu that leans into the Lowcountry terroir (sweetgrass body wraps, sea salt scrubs, locally-sourced botanical oils). Couples treatment suites are bookable for half-day packages and are popular for anniversary stays. The fitness centre is large and properly equipped, with sunrise yoga on the beach lawn three mornings a week in season. None of this is groundbreaking. All of it is competently delivered in a way that the rest of mid-island Hilton Head simply does not match.
Port Royal Plantation includes three golf courses — Barony, Planter's Row, and Robber's Row — accessible directly through the resort's golf concierge with preferred Westin guest tee times. The bike trail network connects the resort to the rest of Hilton Head's coastal greenway, and the resort's bike rental desk hands out cruisers by the half-day. Tennis is on-site, with eight courts, lessons, and a teaching pro. Children's programming runs through Westin Family Kids Club during summer and holiday weeks. None of this is unique to Hilton Head. The point is that the Westin assembles all of it under one roof, on the right beach, at a price that makes a week-long family stay defensible. That is the resort's job, and it does it better than anyone in Mid-Island.
This is the default Hilton Head family resort, and the reason is simple: the configuration just works. Three pools mean toddlers, teenagers, and parents are not fighting for the same lounger. The Splash Beach Bar handles lunch without anyone changing. The Westin Family Kids Club runs all day in season so parents can take a real morning off. Bike rentals get the older kids onto the trail network. Connecting oceanfront rooms are bookable in advance. The week sells itself.
Heavenly Spa by Westin is genuinely good — full oceanfront, eleven treatment rooms, and a treatment menu rooted in Lowcountry botanicals. Pair it with the adults-only pool, sunrise beach yoga, and the long, walkable shoreline at Port Royal, and a wellness week assembles itself. Book the half-day couples treatment suite for two and the rest of the day belongs to the dunes. Not Six Senses, but the best wellness option on the island that doesn't require a thirty-minute drive to Palmetto Bluff.
For couples returning to Hilton Head for an anniversary, the Westin handles the occasion well without trying too hard. Request an oceanfront suite, book Carolina Room for the dinner with the right Sancerre, and arrange the spa couples package for the morning of. The adults-only pool is the daytime base. Sunset cocktails at Ocean Lounge, then a long walk on the beach at Port Royal — empty north of the resort by 8pm. Significant, unfussy, and reliably executed every time.

The Westin at Port Royal is built for it. Three pools, a real spa, three golf courses out the back gate, and twelve miles of beach beyond. Start with the right resort and the week handles itself.
