The Hotel

Rambagh Palace was originally built in 1835 as a small garden house for the wet nurse of Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh II of Jaipur — and was expanded multiple times over the next century into the principal royal residence of the Jaipur royal family. The Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II (the last reigning Maharaja before Indian independence) commissioned the substantial early-20th-century expansion, and the property remained the active royal residence until the 1957 conversion to a hotel. The Taj Hotels group has operated the property since 1972, with the Maharaja's family retaining a small private apartment within the palace.

The 78 rooms split between the entry-level Palace Rooms (in the smaller categories of the original palace), the Luxury Rooms with the larger configurations, the Historical Suites (the most-coveted category — restored royal apartments with original architectural detail), and the multi-bedroom Suites including the Sukh Niwas Suite (the property's flagship — the original Maharaja's master apartments preserved with the royal family's original furniture). Every room retains substantial period architectural detail.

The grounds — the property's 47-acre restored Mughal gardens (one of India's most-photographed luxury hotel garden settings), the heated outdoor swimming pool, the Jiva Spa, the fitness centre, the property's polo grounds (Sawai Man Singh's polo court is preserved), and the multi-restaurant complex — make Rambagh Palace one of the most architecturally and culturally significant luxury hotels in India.

Dining is at multiple restaurants. Suvarna Mahal is the headline royal-Rajasthani fine-dining (in the original palace's grand dining hall). Polo Bar is the historical bar in the original royal billiard room. The Verandah is the all-day with garden views. The wine programme is comprehensive. Service is the consistent global Taj standard delivered by a heavily Rajasthani team. Rambagh Palace is the defining Jaipur palace luxury hotel and one of India's most architecturally significant heritage luxury hotels.
