The Hotel

The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel at 7000 Hollywood Boulevard opened in 1927 and hosted the first Academy Awards ceremony in 1929, establishing itself from the earliest years of the sound era as the gathering place for the industry it remains adjacent to a century later. Marilyn Monroe lived here for two years in the early 1950s, a period documented in the famous full-length mirror, still on the premises, that reportedly contains her reflection. David Hockney painted the Tropicana Pool's floor tiles in the 1980s, an artwork that is simultaneously a functioning pool floor and one of the more valuable pieces of applied art in a Los Angeles hotel.

The 302 rooms and suites occupy the original Spanish Colonial building and various extensions, ranging from Classic configurations in the original structure to poolside Bungalows and the Penthouse suite above the rooftop. Room design sits between historical homage and contemporary function: the heritage architectural details — coffered ceilings, period tile work, the original corridor proportions — are preserved within rooms that have been updated for contemporary comfort without erasing their 1927 character.

Public Kitchen & Bar handles the hotel's primary dining function as an all-day California kitchen with genuine commitment to the quality of ingredients and technique. The Tropicana Pool Bar operates as both a hotel amenity and a neighbourhood social destination — the Hockney-tiled pool deck, heated year-round, attracts a clientele that includes hotel guests and the Hollywood industry locals who have discovered it as the most aesthetically distinctive pool in the neighbourhood.

The Walk of Fame begins immediately in front of the hotel; the TCL Chinese Theatre is directly across Hollywood Boulevard; the Dolby Theatre where the Academy Awards now take place is four blocks east. For guests whose Los Angeles itinerary is oriented around the Hollywood mythology — the film history, the studio lots, the entertainment industry institutions — no hotel is more precisely located within that mythology.

Best for Bachelor / Bachelorette

The Tropicana Pool's Hockney floor, the Hollywood Boulevard location, and the hotel's residual industry mythology create the bachelor/bachelorette infrastructure that the Roosevelt has been providing since the 1970s. Private pool deck bookings accommodate groups; the hotel's bar programme handles the evening; Hollywood Boulevard and the clubs of the surrounding neighbourhood provide the night. For groups whose relationship to Hollywood celebrity culture is the point of the trip, no hotel places them more precisely within it.

Best for Solo Retreat

The Hollywood Roosevelt solo retreat case is the mythology: a week in a room where the walls have absorbed a century of American cultural production, with the Hockney pool for afternoons and the Walk of Fame for morning walks. The hotel's design tension — the 1927 bones and the contemporary updates — creates an interior environment with more character than most new-build boutiques can accumulate. For a creative retreat that needs the stimulation of industry mythology, the Roosevelt provides it without artificiality.
