The Conrad Maldives Rangali Island opened in 1997 as the Hilton Maldives — the first international branded resort in South Ari Atoll, on a pair of small natural islands (Rangali, the smaller adults-island, and Rangalifinolhu, the larger family-island) connected by a 500-metre teak footbridge over the lagoon. In 2007 Hilton transferred the property to its luxury Conrad sub-brand. The two-island geometry has remained the property's central proposition for nearly thirty years: families and groups stay on Rangalifinolhu with the larger pool, the kids' club, and the bulk of the dining; couples and honeymooners stay on Rangali with the spa, the over-water villa cluster, and Ithaa.

The 12-seat dining room serves a six-course tasting menu against a 270-degree acrylic-tunnel view of the South Ari reef and is, two decades on, still the world's most-booked underwater dinner. South Ari Atoll has the Maldives' most consistent year-round whale-shark presence — the Conrad's house-reef sits within the South Ari Marine Protected Area, and the resort's marine-biology team runs daily snorkel and scuba programmes that have hosted research from the Maldives Whale Shark Research Programme for years. Transfers from Malé use a 25-minute domestic flight to Maamigili and a 5-minute speedboat — total 90 minutes from Velana International. For travellers who want the most established, most-recognised Maldives address with the recognisable underwater dining and bedroom features intact and a working family/couple split that few single-island resorts can replicate, the Conrad remains the default.
