Velaa Private Island opened in December 2013 as the personal Maldives project of Czech billionaire Petr and Jana Krc — the founder of the PPF Group's Home Credit consumer-finance company — built without external operator partnership and run independently from any of the major hospitality brands. The architect is Petr Kolář of Atelier 8000 (a Czech firm previously known for residential and ski-resort work in Central Europe), and the master plan is the most distinctive in the Maldives: a turtle-shaped layout (velaa is the Dhivehi word for turtle) with the public buildings forming the head, the over-water villas the curving carapace, and the residences the four limbs.
