Hôtel de Jobo

A flamboyant Marais 4-star — twenty-four rooms by Bambi Sloan in homage to Joséphine Bonaparte, leopard-rose carpets, trompe-l'œil marquetry parquet, and a hidden courtyard ninety seconds from Place des Vosges.

#42 in Paris
Solo Retreat Anniversary Honeymoon Boutique

"Bambi Sloan's most committed hotel project — every carpet, every wallpaper, every cushion drawn for Joséphine Bonaparte's apocryphal Paris pied-à-terre. The Marais's most theatrically decorated 4-star, and the smallest serious one."

The Hotel

Hôtel de Jobo opened in 2016 as a small Marais 4-star and quickly became the design-press's preferred photograph of the new wave of Paris boutiques. The building at 10 rue d'Ormesson — a quiet street running between rue Saint-Antoine and the eastern flank of Place des Vosges — was a 19th-century residential block, restored room-by-room around its hidden interior courtyard. Owner-decorator Bambi Sloan, the Anglo-American Paris-based designer best known for her own apartment in Le Figaro Madame and her work for Christian Louboutin and the Banke, took the entire project as a single creative argument: the hotel as Joséphine Bonaparte's apocryphal pied-à-terre.

Twenty-four rooms across four floors run from compact Single Rooms at 14 square metres up to the Junior Suite at 28 square metres. The rooms are small — that is the honest pricing argument — but every soft surface is custom: leopard-print carpets sprinkled with roses for the bar and reception, a "bed of roses" carpet pattern for the corridors, and a trompe-l'œil marquetry parquet pattern for the bedroom carpets that reads as inlaid wood from across the room. Each bathroom is in marble; each bed is custom; every cushion is a Sloan original. The Joséphine Suite is the headline category — the only room with a small balcony onto the rue d'Ormesson.

The hidden courtyard — accessed from a passage at the end of the lobby — is the property's strongest single feature. In summer it functions as the breakfast garden; in winter it is a glass-roofed conservatory with a small bar that serves cocktails to non-guests by reservation. A ground-floor tea-room and the bar handle the all-day register; there is no full restaurant, but the Marais's strongest food street — rue de Rivoli at Mariage Frères, rue de Bretagne for the Marché des Enfants Rouges, rue des Rosiers for L'As du Fallafel and the Jewish Marais — is at the door.

The position is the Marais's quiet edge. Place des Vosges — the city's oldest planned square, since 1612 — is ninety seconds on foot. Métro Saint-Paul (line 1) is 90 seconds; Bastille (lines 1, 5, 8) is six minutes; the Picasso Museum is eight minutes; the Centre Pompidou is twelve minutes. Travellers who want a Marais stay where the building has been carefully decorated rather than just refurbished will find the Jobo the right choice — and at €240 entry the price-per-design-quality ratio is among the strongest in central Paris.

Best Occasion Fit

Solo Retreat

A single-decorator boutique 4-star in the Marais at €240 a night is the rare combination. The compact Classic Single is sensibly priced for one person; the courtyard handles the long-breakfast moment; the Marais on foot is the day. Solo female travellers report the rue d'Ormesson as quiet and well-lit at night and the hotel's small staff as attentive without being intrusive.

Anniversary

A long-weekend anniversary that wants Paris-without-the-palace-tariff. The Junior Suite is the right booking; the Place des Vosges arcade two minutes away is the dinner-walk; the Picasso Museum and the Pompidou are both within fifteen minutes; the courtyard at breakfast is the morning ritual. The hotel will arrange a small welcome — a Mariage Frères tea selection or Pâtisserie Stohrer petit-fours — without theatrics.

Honeymoon

For honeymoons that prefer Paris-as-a-decorated-room over Paris-as-a-grand-hotel, the Joséphine Suite at the Jobo is the booking. The signature category has the only balcony in the building; the courtyard handles the morning; the Marais's restaurants are at the door. This is the right answer for travellers who care more about the photograph of the room than the Place Vendôme address.
