A 46-room 5-star Champs-Élysées boutique by Anouska Hempel, opened 2018 sixty seconds from the avenue itself — restaurant Galanga, a 13-metre indoor swimming pool, hammam, and the most decorated small-hotel project in the 8th arrondissement of the past decade.
"Anouska Hempel's last serious hotel project — and the only Champs-Élysées 5-star where you can swim before breakfast without crossing a corridor of conference tables. The Black Cat suite is the room you photograph; the Galanga dinner is the meal you remember."
Monsieur George opened in 2018 at the corner of rue Washington and rue Chateaubriand — sixty seconds north of the Champs-Élysées at the end of the avenue closest to the Arc de Triomphe. The building, an early 20th-century Haussmannian block, was rebuilt from the inside out by owner Anne Lamouche over a four-year programme; interiors were entrusted to Anouska Hempel, the New Zealand-born Lady Weinberg whose previous Paris work included the Blakes Hotel London and a long line of Hempel-designed rooms in Mayfair, Athens, and Sydney. Monsieur George reads as Hempel's last serious hotel project — every fabric, every door-handle, every lamp shade specified to her drawings.
Forty-six rooms across six floors run from Cosy Rooms at 16 square metres up through the headline Black Cat Suite at 50 square metres on the top floor with a private terrace. Hempel's signature is everywhere: black-lacquered four-poster beds with white linens, Carrara-marble bathrooms with brass fittings, Empire-style commodes, and walls in the very specific dark olive that Hempel used as her Paris signature. The Junior Suites have the better proportions; the Superior Junior Suites face rue Washington and benefit from the corner light. The Black Cat Suite is the only category with a private terrace and is the room every photographer wants.
Restaurant Galanga is the strongest single argument for booking. Opened with the hotel and reopened post-pandemic, Galanga serves contemporary Thai-French in a low-lit room with hand-painted murals; the menu rotates around chef Khanitha Sappapan's training under Apicius and David Toutain. Le Bar Monsieur George is the all-day register with a serious cocktail card and a small library of rare Cognacs — open until 1 AM. The Spa Monsieur George occupies the basement: a 13-metre indoor swimming pool (the deepest hotel pool in the 8th-arr 5-star tier), hammam, sauna, three treatment rooms, and a 24-hour fitness studio. The pool alone separates the property from most Champs-Élysées 4- and 5-star competitors who restrict pools to the day-spa programme.
The position is the Arc-end of the Champs — sixty seconds south to the avenue at metro Charles de Gaulle–Étoile (lines 1, 2, 6, RER A, the easiest direct line to La Défense for business stays), three minutes to the Arc de Triomphe itself, four minutes to Avenue Montaigne for fashion, six minutes to George V metro for Plaza Athénée or Four Seasons George V if a meeting is required there. Travellers who want a Champs-Élysées address without paying palace rates and without staying in a 200-room business hotel will find Monsieur George the right calibration.
A Paris honeymoon at the Champs-Élysées-but-quietly tier. The Black Cat Suite is the central booking; Galanga at dinner; the indoor pool before breakfast; the four-minute walk down to the avenue at sunset for the Arc lit up. The room and the Hempel-designed bathroom are the reason you book — the Cosy and Classic categories are too compact for an honest honeymoon recommendation.
A milestone anniversary that wants the 8th arrondissement without the Plaza Athénée tariff. The Junior Suite for a quiet weekend; the Black Cat Suite for a major year. The hotel will arrange a private dinner in Galanga's small alcove for two and the Spa Monsieur George will run a couples' programme in the morning. The price-per-night against Plaza Athénée or Bristol equivalents is approximately a third.
For business stays where the meetings happen at La Défense (RER A direct from Étoile, eight minutes), at Avenue des Champs-Élysées corporate offices, or at the Plaza Athénée / Bristol restaurant calendar but you prefer to sleep small, Monsieur George is the right choice. The Wi-Fi is fast, the Boardroom seats eight, the indoor pool handles the post-flight reset, and Le Bar handles the working aperitif.
