Hôtel Rochechouart

The Orso group's 108-room Pigalle flagship — opened October 2020 inside a restored 1920s Art Deco dance hall, the bones of South Pigalle visible in every corner, with a 7th-floor rooftop terrace facing Sacré-Cœur.

#34 in Paris
Solo Retreat Bachelor/ette Anniversary Boutique

"South Pigalle's first serious post-pandemic opening — and the smartest. The room you book is the room you photograph: 1923 dance-hall bones, brass and rose-marble bathrooms, and a 7th-floor terrace with Sacré-Cœur where it should be."

The Hotel

Hôtel Rochechouart opened on 2 October 2020 as the Pigalle flagship of Orso Hotels, the small, design-led Paris hospitality group founded by Adrien Gloaguen (also responsible for Hôtel Paradis, Hôtel Panache, and Hôtel Hana). The building at 55 boulevard de Rochechouart was constructed in the early 1920s as a working-class music-and-dance establishment — one of the original Pigalle bal-musette venues that gave the neighbourhood its first identity. Most of the original Art Deco volumes — the double-height ground-floor room, the marble-clad staircase, the cast-iron mezzanine — were preserved through the conversion under architect Festen, who also designed the interiors.

One hundred and eight rooms across seven floors run from compact Classic categories at 14 square metres up through Junior Suites and Grand Suites. The signature aesthetic is unmistakable: walnut headboards, brass fittings, terrazzo bathroom floors, and bathroom fixtures in rose-marble — the room you book is the room you photograph. The Junior Suites on the upper floors have small balconies; the Grand Junior Suite on the 6th floor has a private terrace facing Sacré-Cœur. Sound insulation is good for a 1920s envelope but not soundproof — Pigalle is louder than the 8th arrondissement and the price reflects that calibration.

Public spaces are the property's strongest single proposition. Le Restaurant Rochechouart serves contemporary French in the original 1923 dance-hall room — high ceilings, original mosaic floor, the bandstand still in place as a feature. Le Bar Rochechouart on the ground floor maintains a serious cocktail programme to 2 AM with a pianist three nights a week. The 7th-floor rooftop terrace — open to guests and to walk-up reservations in season — has the closest direct view of Sacré-Cœur from any hotel below the Butte Montmartre, and the view alone closes the booking for half the inventory most months.

The position is South Pigalle's central spine — Boulevard de Rochechouart between metro Anvers (60 sec walk to the funicular up to Sacré-Cœur) and metro Pigalle (90 sec walk). Gare du Nord is six minutes by metro for Eurostar arrivals, Galeries Lafayette is twelve minutes on foot, the Moulin Rouge is four minutes, and the climb up to Sacré-Cœur and Place du Tertre takes ten minutes via the funicular. Travellers with a Mayfair-or-Faubourg-Saint-Honoré expectation should book the 8th arrondissement; travellers who actually want Paris should book here.

Best Occasion Fit

Solo Retreat

The smartest design-hotel solo trip in Paris under €350 a night. Single travellers eat at the bar, work in the lobby (the Wi-Fi is excellent), walk to Sacré-Cœur in the morning before the queues form, and use the rooftop in the early evening. The room categories are sensibly sized for one person — the 14-square-metre Classic is more than adequate; the 22-square-metre Superior is generous. Solo female travellers report Pigalle daytime as completely safe.

Bachelor / Bachelorette

For a Paris bachelor or bachelorette weekend the Rochechouart is the right calibration. The hotel has the rooftop terrace; Pigalle has Le Carmen, Le Mansart, and Bus Palladium within ten minutes; Moulin Rouge is four minutes; the Boulevard de Clichy bars are at the door. Bookings at the Grand Junior Suite category give a group of 6–8 a private terrace for the pre-out drink. The hotel handles bachelor / bachelorette parties without theatrics.

Anniversary

For an anniversary that prefers contemporary Paris over palace-hotel Paris, the Grand Junior Suite with terrace is the booking. The 7th-floor terrace at sunset — Sacré-Cœur framed, the city stretching south — is the dinner-substitute moment; Le Restaurant Rochechouart does a serious dinner if you want one; the funicular up the Butte takes three minutes for the after-dinner walk back through Place du Tertre.
