The Hotel

The Slate sits on the northern stretch of Nai Yang Beach, ten minutes from Phuket International Airport — a setting that on paper sounds like a transit-quality compromise but in execution becomes the property's defining edge. The site is the former Indigo Pearl tin-mining concession, and Bill Bensley (the bombastic Bangkok-based architect-designer behind Capella Ubud, the Siam Bangkok, and Anantara Golden Triangle, among many others) wrote the rebrand and the architecture from the ground up. The Slate opened in 2015 as the renamed property and immediately became the most design-aggressive luxury hotel in Phuket. Design Hotels admitted it the same year.

The 184 keys (177 rooms plus seven private pool villas) are organised across multiple low-rise buildings on a 65-rai property — the Tin Mine wing closest to the beach with industrial cast-iron and copper finishes and exposed structural steel; the Pearl Bed and Coqoon residences set further back in jungle. Every room category carries Bensley's hand: oversized handle-pulls, mining-era found objects (mine cars, tin-press machinery, conveyor parts) integrated into the interiors, and a colour palette of slate-grey, copper, oxblood, and bronze. The pool villas (the "Pool Suite Villa with Outdoor Bath" category in particular) are the property's flagship for couples — large, decorated like miniature mining barons' summer residences, and pool-included.

Three outdoor pools spread across the property — the Coqoon Pool with cabana programming, the Tin Mine Pool with adults-only late afternoon lounging, and the Pearl Pool more family-oriented. The Coqoon Spa is set in a circular bamboo-and-thatched-roof structure built into a small lake on-site (a literal coqoon pavilion you walk down a wooden bridge to reach), with seven treatment rooms, an outdoor jacuzzi, and the most theatrical spa-architecture experience on Phuket. The Tin Box kids' club covers ages 4–11 with structured programming and a strong children-eat-free dining proposition during low season.

Eight restaurants and bars cover the dining range. Black Ginger is the flagship Thai restaurant — accessed by a small punt across a lily-covered pond, set in a black-painted Thai pavilion, and consistently the property's signature memory for guests. Tin Mine Restaurant is the multi-cuisine all-day in the converted tin-press hall. Rivet is the underground bar with mining-era cocktail program. The Slate Beach Club handles daytime beachfront. The Slate's airport proximity (10 minutes by complimentary shuttle) makes it the rare luxury Phuket hotel that works for short stays — a Bangkok-side weekend, a stopover en route to Krabi, or a final night before flying home — and the design is the reason guests choose it over more conventionally beautiful but architecturally ordinary west-coast competitors.

Best Occasion Fit

Anniversary

The design-led anniversary trip. Book a Pool Suite Villa for the private pool and Bensley-furnished outdoor bath. Black Ginger dinner accessed by punt is the kind of small theatrical detail that anniversary trips remember. Smart Phuket option for couples who've already done the conventional Pansea/Bang Tao loop.

Solo Retreat

The Slate handles solo travellers unusually well — eight bars and restaurants with the kind of seating layouts that don't penalise single diners, an in-jungle Coqoon Spa for digital-detox programmes, and a property scale that allows for proper anonymity. Strong Wi-Fi for work-from-Phuket scenarios and the airport proximity that makes shorter trips feasible.

Family Holiday

Tin Box kids' club covers ages 4–11; three pools handle different family modes; the property is large enough that families and couples coexist without crowding. Pool Villas for two-family configurations work well. Nai Yang Beach is calm-water and broad. The most-design-forward family hotel on Phuket.
