The Hotel

The Monumental building at Avenida dos Aliados 151 was completed in 1923 to designs by Porto architect Manuel Marques as the headquarters of the Companhia Aurifícia and the Café Monumental — the latter the city's most fashionable Belle-Époque coffee house through the 1920s and 1930s, frequented by the writers Fernando Pessoa and Eugénio de Andrade. The building's classified Belle-Époque facade — granite and tile, with a corner tower at Praça da Liberdade and decorative iron balconies along the Aliados elevation — is one of the central avenue's defining architectural set-pieces. The building stood as office space and a downstairs café through the late 20th century before acquisition in 2015 and a four-year restoration completed in November 2019, when it opened as Maison Albar Le Monumental Palace — the Paris Inn Group's first Portuguese property and the eighth Maison Albar globally.

The 76 rooms — including 12 suites — are arranged across the building's six floors with the original 1923 plan preserved. Rooms split between Avenida-facing categories with the original tile balconies and quieter inner-court categories overlooking the glass-roofed atrium that was added during the restoration. Standard categories begin at 25 square metres; Junior Suites at 38 square metres add separate sitting areas; the Penthouse Suite occupies the top-floor corner at 110 square metres with a private terrace overlooking the Aliados and direct line of sight to the Torre dos Clérigos and the Estação de São Bento. Bathrooms are travertine throughout; bath products are Floraïku Paris, the Albar group's signature.

Le Monument is the named fine-dining restaurant on the ground floor, in the original Café Monumental space with its restored 1923 tile work and stuccoed ceilings — chef Júlio Pereira runs a contemporary Portuguese tasting menu rooted in traditional preparations. Brunch and all-day dining is at the brasserie Café Monumental in the original front room facing the avenue. The L'Oryx bar runs a Portuguese cocktail programme with a focus on Madeira and aged ports. The Spa Cinq Mondes — the brand's only Portuguese spa, opened with the hotel in November 2019 — runs a 25-metre indoor heated pool, hammam, sauna and a full treatment programme over 600 square metres on the lower-ground floor.

The address is the booking proposition. From the front door it is two minutes on foot to São Bento Station, three minutes to the Torre dos Clérigos, six minutes to the Livraria Lello, eight minutes to the Mercado do Bolhão, twelve minutes to the Ribeira riverfront, and the same to the Casa da Música via the Aliados-Boavista axis. For business travellers and centre-prioritising leisure travellers — anyone who wants to walk out the front door into the city's principal avenue — this is the unambiguous Porto five-star. The Yeatman is the across-the-river alternative; this is the Porto centre answer.
