The Hotel

Vila Foz occupies the Casa Lima Júnior — an 1898 ocean-facing Belle Époque mansion built for the merchant family of the same name on Avenida de Montevideu, the seafront promenade of Foz do Douro at the Atlantic mouth of the Douro estuary, three kilometres west of the Ribeira proper. The mansion was acquired and restored across 2018–2019 by the Bessa family and opened as a five-star boutique in October 2019; it was admitted to Relais & Châteaux in 2021 and is one of only four Relais properties in Portugal. The principal architectural decision of the restoration was to preserve the original building's dressed-granite facade, double-height stair, and ocean-view drawing rooms in entirety, and to add a contemporary glass-and-stone wing extending west toward the rocks for the additional rooms, restaurant and spa.

The 65 rooms divide between the historic mansion (12 named rooms across the original three floors, with original 1898 stuccoed ceilings and parquet preserved) and the contemporary wing (53 rooms with floor-to-ceiling Atlantic windows). Every category from Standard upward has either an ocean view or a south-facing courtyard view; Premium and Suite categories all face the ocean directly. The Casa Lima Suite, in the original mansion's first-floor corner, is the milestone unit at 75 square metres with a private terrace overlooking the rocks. Bathrooms in the contemporary wing are travertine; in the historic wing, restored with original tile and brass fittings.

The dining programme is led by chef Vasco Coelho Santos at the named restaurant Vasco — Coelho Santos previously held the star at Euskalduna Studio in Porto from 2019 and brought the same modernist Portuguese tasting register to Vila Foz on opening, where the property's Michelin star was awarded in the 2022 guide and has held continuously since. The Flor de Lis brasserie does the all-day programme on the ocean terrace; the bar runs a port-and-cocktail list specifically against the building's ocean-side aspect at sunset, the most-photographed angle on the property. The Spa Vila Foz on the lower-ground level runs a 13-metre indoor heated pool cantilevered over the rocks, hammam, sauna, and a Carita Paris treatment programme.

The Foz do Douro position is the booking decision. From the front door it is 25 metres to the seafront promenade, two kilometres of beach walking west to Praia do Carneiro and the lighthouse, and a 12-minute Uber back to São Bento Station for old-town walking. For travellers who want the ocean as the daily view and a quiet boutique five-star with a Michelin kitchen rather than the central old-town address, this is the unambiguous Porto answer. The Yeatman is the hillside-and-river alternative; Vila Foz is the ocean-and-mansion alternative.
