The Hotel

Matakauri Lodge was opened on 23 December 1999 by US billionaire and conservationist Julian Robertson — founder of Tiger Management — as the second of his three Robertson Lodges in New Zealand, after Kauri Cliffs in Northland (1999) and before Cape Kidnappers in Hawke's Bay (2003). The site, on a 14-hectare bluff above the western shore of Lake Wakatipu eight minutes by car from central Queenstown, was selected for the uninterrupted line-of-sight to Cecil Peak and the Remarkables across the lake — the most architecturally significant lake-view position in the Queenstown basin. The architectural commission was Auckland practice Pearson and Associates with interior design by Virginia Fisher; the building reads as a series of pitched-roof timber lodges arrayed around the central main lodge, deliberately set into the slope so as not to compete with the natural lake-and-mountain landscape.

The 12 rooms divide between 4 named lakefront cottages — Suite 1 through Suite 4, each at 90 to 110 square metres with private outdoor decks directly onto the lake bluff — and 8 rooms in the main lodge at 70 to 80 square metres. The Owner's Cottage is the milestone unit, the original Julian Robertson family cottage at the southern end of the property, available to rent only when the family is not in residence; it includes its own kitchen, dining room, and three bedrooms. Bathrooms throughout are travertine with deep tubs and underfloor heating; bath products are New Zealand-made Antipodes.

The dining programme is the headline operational layer of Matakauri. Dinner is served in the main lodge dining room with its panoramic Remarkables view, with a four-course set menu changing daily — the wine cellar holds 7,000 bottles with deep verticals on Central Otago Pinot Noir from Felton Road, Mt Difficulty, Burn Cottage and Two Paddocks (Sam Neill's vineyard). Lunch is on the lodge terrace; afternoon tea is included as part of the all-inclusive booking; pre-dinner canapés are served in the main lodge lounge from 6 PM. The Spa runs five treatment rooms and an indoor heated 12-metre swimming pool. The infinity hot tub on the main lodge terrace, with the Remarkables as the backdrop, is the most-photographed wellness image on the property.

The Glenorchy Road position is the booking decision relative to Eichardt's village address. Matakauri is 8 minutes by car from central Queenstown, 12 minutes from the Skyline Gondola, 20 minutes from Queenstown Airport, and 35 minutes from Coronet Peak ski field. The lodge runs a complimentary shuttle into central Queenstown for shopping or restaurant evenings; otherwise the proposition is the lodge itself — meals included, wine paired, hiking and fishing programming arranged on-site, helicopter excursions to Milford Sound and Mount Cook arranged through the concierge. For travellers who want the all-inclusive lodge register over the village-and-restaurant register, Matakauri is the unambiguous Queenstown answer.

Best Occasion Fit

Honeymoon

A lakefront cottage with the private outdoor deck, the four-course dinner programme paired against the Central Otago wine cellar, the spa programme through the morning, and a helicopter day-charter to Milford Sound. The unambiguous lodge-register Queenstown honeymoon booking; competes directly with Eichardt's village register for the city's #1 honeymoon spot.

Anniversary

A milestone-anniversary booking with the Owner's Cottage when available, private dinner-for-two on the lodge terrace, and the wine programme paired against the Felton Road Pinot Noir cellar. The Robertson Lodges service register handles these as standard.

Wellness Retreat

For the slow-Queenstown booking — three to five days centred on the lakefront cottage, the spa programme, the daily morning hiking from the property's network, and the Antipodes treatment menu — Matakauri is the right base. The all-inclusive structure removes operational decision-making.
