Matakauri Lodge was opened on 23 December 1999 by US billionaire and conservationist Julian Robertson — founder of Tiger Management — as the second of his three Robertson Lodges in New Zealand, after Kauri Cliffs in Northland (1999) and before Cape Kidnappers in Hawke's Bay (2003). The site, on a 14-hectare bluff above the western shore of Lake Wakatipu eight minutes by car from central Queenstown, was selected for the uninterrupted line-of-sight to Cecil Peak and the Remarkables across the lake — the most architecturally significant lake-view position in the Queenstown basin. The architectural commission was Auckland practice Pearson and Associates with interior design by Virginia Fisher; the building reads as a series of pitched-roof timber lodges arrayed around the central main lodge, deliberately set into the slope so as not to compete with the natural lake-and-mountain landscape.
The 12 rooms divide between 4 named lakefront cottages — Suite 1 through Suite 4, each at 90 to 110 square metres with private outdoor decks directly onto the lake bluff — and 8 rooms in the main lodge at 70 to 80 square metres. The Owner's Cottage is the milestone unit, the original Julian Robertson family cottage at the southern end of the property, available to rent only when the family is not in residence; it includes its own kitchen, dining room, and three bedrooms.
