Sandhotel

A 67-room boutique on Laugavegur in three combined early-1900s timber-frame buildings — central Reykjavík's most-walked retail street as the address — with Sumac restaurant by chef Hafliði Ragnarsson and a 280 m² rooftop terrace.

Solo Retreat Anniversary Honeymoon Boutique

"Three early-1900s timber buildings on Laugavegur stitched into a single boutique. Sumac is the dinner. The rooftop is the rest. The walking-Reykjavík booking that doesn't require the EDITION budget."

The Hotel

Sandhotel opened on 1 May 2018 as the central-Reykjavík boutique project of the Þingholt Hotel Group — the small Icelandic family-run operator behind a half-dozen four- and five-star city-centre properties. The building is the architectural decision of the offer: three contiguous early-1900s timber-frame buildings at Laugavegur 34 — restored Reykjavík vernacular townhouses with the original 1903–1908 timber-and-corrugated-iron facades preserved on the street side — combined into a single 67-room hotel through a deliberately discreet contemporary glass-and-steel rear extension that opens onto a small inner courtyard. The interior architecture is by Reykjavík practice Hornsteinar, with a Nordic-minimal vocabulary of pale oak, painted timber, brass detailing and a deliberate understatement that sets the property apart from both the contemporary EDITION register and the heritage Borg register.

The 67 rooms — including 9 suites — are arranged across the three combined buildings' floors. Standard categories at 22 square metres are smaller than the EDITION's standard tier (a function of the heritage-building footprint) but the architectural quality compensates — restored 1903 timber-frame ceilings preserved, exposed beams in the upper-floor categories, and original Reykjavík sash windows on the Laugavegur side. The Junior Suite at 44 square metres adds a sitting area; the Penthouse Suite at 78 square metres on the top floor of the central building is the milestone unit, with the 280 m² rooftop terrace as the private outdoor extension. Bathrooms are travertine; bath products are Sóley Organics, the Icelandic herbalist brand.

Sumac is the headline restaurant — a Levantine-Icelandic crossover under chef Hafliði Ragnarsson, the Reykjavík-born chef whose previous work at Apótek and Slippbarinn made the city's first Lebanese-Icelandic kitchen identity, and who took the Sumac kitchen at Sandhotel from opening as a separate-investor partnership. The restaurant has been Reykjavík's most-reviewed kitchen since 2019 and competes directly with Tides at the EDITION for the city's best-restaurant slot. Sandbar runs the lobby cocktail and aperitivo programme. The 280-square-metre rooftop terrace — equipped with a small bar through July and August — is the property's signature image and the only Laugavegur rooftop bookable for private events. There is no pool or spa.

The Laugavegur position is the booking trade-off — directly on Reykjavík's principal retail-and-restaurant axis, two minutes from Hallgrímskirkja, three minutes to Tjörnin, six minutes to the Old Harbour, eight minutes to Harpa, and seven minutes to Austurvöllur. Laugavegur runs Friday- and Saturday-night nightlife noise from 11 PM to 4 AM in the summer high season — the property uses double-glazed soundproofing on the Laugavegur side, but light-sleeping travellers should book the inner-courtyard or upper-floor categories specifically. For walking-Reykjavík travellers wanting the boutique-and-restaurant booking at the four-star price point — particularly for solo travellers and design-conscious couples — Sandhotel is the right answer. 101 is the art-collector boutique alternative; Sandhotel is the restaurant-and-rooftop alternative.

Best Occasion Fit

Solo Retreat

For solo travellers wanting the central walkable Reykjavík base with the strongest hotel restaurant in the city, Sandhotel is the right boutique answer. The Standard category, the Sumac chef's counter as the dinner option, the rooftop in summer, and the staff team handles solo guests with the same warmth as couples.

Anniversary

A Reykjavík anniversary booking that prioritises the kitchen-and-rooftop proposition — the Penthouse Suite with private rooftop access, dinner at Sumac, and the staff team handling the rest. The right Sandhotel anniversary set-up is the rooftop dinner-for-two on a July or August midnight-sun evening.

Honeymoon

For honeymoons combining Reykjavík city base with the Retreat at Blue Lagoon as the wellness half, Sandhotel is the right four-star city base — particularly for couples who prioritise restaurant-led travel over the larger-scale EDITION proposition. Penthouse Suite for the headline; private rooftop dinner-for-two; sumac aperitivo at the bar before walking the Laugavegur evening.
