Picket Fence Motel

A seventeen-room owner-operated motel on Reed Avenue, ten minutes on foot from the Water Street wharves and five minutes from the Algonquin Resort, kept to a noticeably higher standard than the price band would suggest and the dominant family-budget address in Saint Andrews.

"A seventeen-room single-storey motel on Reed Avenue, kept to a higher standard than the category usually allows. The Picket Fence is the booking when the point of the trip is the Bay of Fundy itself rather than the room you sleep in."

The Hotel

The Picket Fence opened in the early 1990s on Reed Avenue, on the inland edge of the Saint Andrews grid roughly half a kilometre from the harbour. The building is a single-storey courtyard motel of the classic eastern-Canadian roadside vocabulary: white shingle siding, the namesake low picket fence along the front lawn, gable roofs, individual exterior entrances. The current owner-operators took the property over in the late 2010s and ran a deliberate room-by-room refresh that raised the standard well above the average for the category: new beds in every room, modernised bathrooms, 37-inch flat-screen televisions, fast WiFi, and a coffee-and-fridge package in every unit.

The seventeen rooms run from compact Standard Queens through Two-Queen family configurations and a small handful of one-bedroom suites with separate sitting areas. Each room holds a work desk, a private bath with hairdryer and free toiletries, a compact refrigerator, a coffee maker, an iron and ironing board, and a window onto either the front lawn or the rear garden. Heating and air-conditioning are individual to each room. The decoration is restrained and modern (white walls, wool throws, framed Charlotte County photography) rather than themed, which is part of why the property reads as a small inn rather than a motel.

There is no on-site restaurant and the operating model assumes the guest is here for the village and the Bay of Fundy rather than for the property itself. The Water Street wharves are a ten-minute walk; the Algonquin Resort's three dining rooms are five minutes on foot; the Chandler Room at the Treadwell Inn is twelve minutes. A simple continental breakfast service runs in the office lounge from 7:00 to 9:30 AM (coffee, juice, fruit, pastries from the village bakery); anything more is the Algonquin or the village.

Service is owner-operated and consistent week to week, which is the operating quality that makes the Picket Fence the budget-category answer in Saint Andrews. Check-in is genuine (the desk knows the village, the trail map, the whale-watching schedule), housekeeping is daily, and the front lawn is genuinely planted and maintained. The motel operates year-round, which makes it one of the very few central-village stays available in deep winter, and books out from mid-June through Labour Day weekend.

Best Occasion Fit

Family Holiday

For a Bay of Fundy family week at a budget that does not stretch to the Algonquin, the Picket Fence is the booking. The Two-Queen family rooms hold a family of four cleanly, the courtyard layout is safer for kids than a corridor hotel, and the location lets the family walk to the whale-watching wharves, the harbour, and the Algonquin's spa-and-pool day passes without driving. Book the corner two-queen for the quietest sleep.

Business

The Picket Fence is the unobvious answer for a one-or-two-night Saint Andrews business stay. WiFi is fast and consistent, the work desk in every room is usable, check-in is owner-operated rather than corporate-anonymous, and the village's small inventory of meeting space (the Algonquin's boardroom, the Treadwell's Chandler Room private room) is a five-minute walk.
