A six-room waterfront inn occupying an 1820 Federal-style merchant house at 129 Water Street, fronted by the Chandler Room Wine Bar and Kitchen, with private balconies onto the Passamaquoddy harbour and the most central village address in Saint Andrews.
"Six rooms over a serious wine bar, right on the Water Street wharves. The Treadwell is the central-village booking when the point of the trip is to leave the room, walk the harbour before breakfast, and be inside the Chandler Room with a glass of Niagara Riesling by 6:30."
The Treadwell Inn occupies a Federal-style merchant house built in 1820 on the seaward side of Water Street, on the row of working wharves that defined Saint Andrews when the town was the busiest port in northern New Brunswick. The building was originally a chandlery and counting house belonging to the Treadwell family; the current ownership took the property through a deliberate room-by-room restoration during the mid-2010s and added the Chandler Room Wine Bar and Kitchen at street level in 2018. The result is a six-room inn that operates as a small hotel rather than a guesthouse, with a serious food-and-wine offer downstairs and a true waterfront orientation upstairs.
The six rooms are arranged across two floors. The four water-side rooms hold private balconies onto the Passamaquoddy harbour and the inner-bay shipping channel; the two garden-side rooms are quieter and look across to the Saint Andrews Customs House. Categories run Garden Room, Waterfront King, Jacuzzi Suite, and the top-tier Captain's Suite, which holds a wraparound balcony at the southwest corner of the building. Each room is air-conditioned, en-suite, and decorated in restrained Federal-period style: wide-board floors, simple white linens, a single brass reading lamp. WiFi is fast and consistent throughout the building.
The Chandler Room Wine Bar and Kitchen, on the ground floor, is the operating reason this inn books out the way it does. The list runs to roughly 180 labels with a particular weight in Niagara, Prince Edward County, and small-grower Loire. The kitchen plates a short Maritime-leaning menu (East Coast oysters by the half-dozen, Bay of Fundy scallops, a single rotating fish of the day) and runs from 5:00 PM to late evening. St Croix Olive, the small olive-oil and gourmet retail concept that grew out of the Chandler Room programme, occupies the south end of the ground floor.
Service is single-property and consistent: the owners are usually on the floor at the Chandler Room and the small front-of-house team handles the inn rooms upstairs in turn. The Water Street whale-watching wharves are directly opposite the front door, Market Square is one block to the west, and the Saint Andrews Blockhouse is a ten-minute walk along the harbour path. The inn operates year-round, which makes it one of the few central-village stays available in deep winter, when the rest of the seasonal stock has closed.
The Treadwell reads anniversary because the room product, the waterfront orientation, and the Chandler Room downstairs collapse the entire evening into a single building. Book the Captain's Suite for the south-west balcony, reserve the back table at the Chandler Room for night one, and take a sunrise walk along the harbour path before breakfast. The whale-watching wharf opposite the front door runs sunset cruises that work well for a quiet second-night booking.
For a solo stay in Saint Andrews, the Treadwell is the village's most usable answer. The Chandler Room takes solo covers seriously, the wharves are a single-traveller landscape, and the building's scale (six rooms) is small enough that the staff recognise the booking but large enough that a solo guest does not feel observed. Ask for a Garden Room rather than a Waterfront if quiet sleep is the priority.
