Phum Baitang

"Arnaud Zannier built a working Khmer village on 8 hectares of rice paddies west of Siem Reap. Forty-five stilt villas; the buffalo grazing through the property is real. The eco-and-village alternative to the central five-star cluster — and the most photographed of the four Zannier resorts."

The Hotel

Phum Baitang — Khmer for "green village" — opened on 7 September 2015 as the second of four Zannier Hotels resorts (after Le Chalet Zannier in Megève and before Sonop in Namibia and Bãi San Hô in Vietnam). The Belgian-born hotelier Arnaud Zannier acquired the 8-hectare working-rice-paddy site 7 kilometres west of central Siem Reap in 2010 and spent five years on the development, with the architectural commission going to Bangkok-based Pierre Yves Rochon and traditional-Khmer-construction consultants from the Royal Cambodian Architecture Office. The brief was deliberately village-not-resort: rather than a single hotel building, the 45 villas are arrayed across the working farmland as if they were a traditional rural-Khmer village, with raised stilts, traditional thatched roofs, hand-carved teak panels, and the central village-square plan that connects them. The property maintains active rice cultivation across half the site (5 hectares) — the rice harvest in October is a working agricultural event that guests are invited to observe.

The 45 villas — including 5 Pool Villas — divide between Terrace Villas (28 units at 70 sqm with private terraces over the rice paddies) and Pool Villas (5 at 110 sqm with 6-metre private lap pools). The Two-Bedroom Pool Villa at 220 square metres is the milestone unit, with two separate stilt pavilions connected by a central living-pavilion deck. Bathrooms are travertine and locally-sourced Cambodian wood; bath products are Voya, the Irish organic-seaweed brand. The property uses 100% local Cambodian-craftsman labour for the construction, decoration and ongoing maintenance — a deliberate sustainability commitment.

Hang Bay is the principal restaurant — a contemporary Cambodian fine-dining room operating on the second floor of the central pavilion, with floor-to-ceiling windows facing the rice paddies. Bay Phsar handles the all-day brasserie programme. Cigar & Cocktail Lounge is the after-dinner programme. The Spa Khmer is the wellness layer — five treatment rooms, hammam, sauna, with the only authentic Khmer-massage-with-rice-poultice programme in any Siem Reap five-star (the rice from the property's own crop). The 30-metre infinity pool — facing west across the rice paddies toward the sunset — is the property's signature image and is the most-photographed luxury-resort pool in Cambodia.

The Svay Dangkum position is the booking trade-off relative to the central five-star cluster. From the property it is 12 minutes by car to the Old Market, 14 minutes to Pub Street, 15 minutes to Angkor Wat, and 25 minutes by car to Siem Reap-Angkor Airport. The hotel runs complimentary daily shuttles into central Siem Reap and to Angkor Wat — the location is deliberately rural, not within walking range of any other amenity. For travellers wanting the eco-and-village register over the central walking-Siem-Reap or the heritage registers, Phum Baitang is the unambiguous answer. Amansara is the discreet-and-Aman alternative; Phum Baitang is the village-and-rice-paddy alternative.

Best Occasion Fit

Honeymoon

A Pool Villa for the private 6-metre lap pool, dinner at Hang Bay, the Spa Khmer rice-poultice programme, sunset at the infinity pool. The rural-Khmer-village honeymoon proposition is unambiguous.

Wellness Retreat

For the slow-Cambodia booking centred on the Spa Khmer programme, the rice-paddy walking, the daily yoga programme on the central pavilion deck, and the rural-village rhythm, Phum Baitang is the right base. The most authentic wellness register in Siem Reap.

Solo Retreat

For solo travellers wanting the most discreet, most rural, most architecturally significant Cambodia booking outside the Aman tier, Phum Baitang is the right answer. The all-inclusive structure removes operational decision-making; the staff team handles solo guests with the same warmth as couples.
