The Hotel

Castello di Velona occupies a 12th-century stone castle on the Val d'Orcia ridge above Montalcino — the heart of the Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, the most prestigious of Tuscany's wine appellations. The original Velona castle was built in 1190 by the Soarzi family as a watchtower-and-bastion controlling the road from Siena to Rome; it changed hands across the medieval Sienese-Florentine wars; was acquired in 2008 by Czech entrepreneur Daniel Křetínský's then-Tuscany hospitality vehicle; and reopened in 2009 as a 47-key luxury resort after an extensive five-year restoration by Roman architect Massimiliano Fuksas's studio that preserved the medieval castle structure while adding the contemporary spa, pool, and restaurant infrastructure to the perimeter.

The 47 rooms and suites are spread across the original castle keep, the restored stone outbuildings, and a small contemporary villa addition — the most-considered category is the Pool Spa Suite, which includes a private outdoor terrace pool fed by the property's natural thermal source. The Royal Suite occupies the original 12th-century watchtower at the top of the keep — three floors of restored medieval stone, a private outdoor terrace, and the only 360-degree Val d'Orcia panorama on the property. The interior register is contemporary-Tuscan restraint applied to the medieval fabric — exposed stone walls, dark-stained timber beams, terracotta tile floors, and a deliberate decision to keep most public-room walls unhung except for selected Renaissance-religious-art pieces.

What makes Castello di Velona structurally distinctive among Tuscan castle hotels is the natural thermal-spring source — the only Tuscan castle hotel with in-house thermal water. The Velona Wine & Thermal Spa runs eight treatment rooms across two floors of the restored stone wing, an indoor thermal pool, an outdoor heated infinity pool, and a sequence of three private thermal-water suite-pools that the higher rate categories include. The wine-spa programme — combining Brunello-grape vinotherapy treatments with the thermal-water immersion circuit — is unique to the property and is the most-recommended in-house wellness offering.

The estate's 280 hectares hold a working Brunello di Montalcino vineyard producing roughly 60,000 bottles per year under the Castello di Velona label — guests can walk the vineyard with the head winemaker and book structured tastings of the full DOCG range across the 70-bin Velona cellar, plus the broader Brunello-Rosso-Vino Nobile range from the 200-bottle Tuscan-vintage list. The Settepassi restaurant — under chef Giulio Manili — holds one Michelin star (since 2022) and runs a Brunello-DOCG-pairing tasting menu that is the structural anchor of any anniversary stay. For a milestone anniversary or a wellness retreat that wants the medieval-castle and working-Brunello-vineyard combination, Castello di Velona is the most distinctive Val d'Orcia option.

Best Occasion Fit

Anniversary

The Royal Suite in the original 12th-century watchtower is the milestone unit at Castello di Velona — three floors, 200 sqm total, private terrace, the only 360-degree Val d'Orcia view on the property. Anniversaries are typically structured around three to five nights with a private vineyard tour with the head winemaker, a private Settepassi tasting-menu dinner with Brunello pairing, and a couples' wine-and-thermal vinotherapy treatment. Pair with a half-week in Florence at the Four Seasons or Belmond Villa San Michele for the standard Tuscan anniversary arc.

Wellness Retreat

Castello di Velona is the only Tuscan castle hotel with an in-house thermal-water source and is the considered Val d'Orcia choice for a wellness retreat that wants the medieval-architectural register over the Borgo-Santo-Pietro contemporary-spa option. The Brunello-grape vinotherapy programme (the unique combination of Brunello-pomace exfoliation, vinotherapy massage, and thermal-water immersion) is a four-day signature programme; the seven-night Velona Detox programme runs across the May-October open-season weeks.
