"Carved into the cliff outside Positano, private elevator to the beach, the anniversary that earns the 30th."
Il San Pietro di Positano is the great theatrical gesture of the Amalfi Coast: a hotel carved straight into the limestone a kilometre east of Positano, built by Carlo "Carlino" Cinque in the 1960s and opened in 1970, with rooms terraced down the rock and bougainvillea spilling over every balustrade. The Carlo Cinque Suite, with its private cliff-edge terrace and plunge pool, is the suite couples take for a milestone. What sets the hotel apart is genuine: a lift drilled 88 metres down through the cliff to a private beach club at sea level, and it remains the only hotel in Positano with its own beach. Dinner is the other reason to come, the Michelin-starred Zass perched over the water, with the casual Carlino down at the beach for lunch. For a 25th, 30th or 50th, the drama of the place and that hidden elevator are the centrepiece; the honest caveat is that the same cliff means a lot of steps and lifts between levels, so it rewards the mobile rather than the frail.
The Carlo Cinque Suite for the full flagship with private terrace and plunge pool, or a Junior Suite Sea View for the view at a gentler price.
Take the cliff elevator down to the beach early, around 8am, for the water to yourself. Book Zass for the anniversary dinner and ask for a cliffside two-top facing Positano. For a day on the water, the hotel runs guests over to Capri on its vintage Riva.
Il San Pietro di Positano sits within our broader Top 20 Hotels on the Amalfi Coast for an Anniversary list. It scored an aggregate 9.9/10 across the three editorial criteria, competitive against the field but, on an anniversary-specific factors, the angle above is what earned its rank. For the alternatives in the same Amalfi Coast neighbourhood, see Positano and adjacent. For a different city entirely, see the related lists below.
Once your dates are fixed, aim to reserve the room about three months out. The view-facing suites disappear earliest, and high-season inventory moves on a timescale of months, not weeks. Suite-level rooms with private plunge pools or terraces, the ones that earn this rank, are typically the first to sell out.
