The 100-villa circular master-island by Kerry Hill Architects, the only fully round resort form in the Maldives, opened June 2021 in North Malé Atoll, with four signature restaurants and the brand's first overwater Ritz-Carlton Spa pavilion.
"The 2021 Ritz-Carlton on the Fari Islands, Marriott's Kerry Hill-designed Maldives flagship."
Why this rank: The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands opened in June 2021 in the North Male Atoll, the second resort on the Fari Islands development after Patina. Its 100 villas, all with private pools, are the work of Kerry Hill Architects, whose restraint, deep eaves, and circular plans set the resort apart from the usual Maldives thatch. Dining runs across seven venues, among them Summer Pavilion (Cantonese, twinned with the Michelin-starred Singapore original), La Locanda (southern Italian), and the casual Beach Shack. The ring-shaped over-water spa is the wellness anchor. A 45-minute speedboat from Male, with no seaplane required, and Marriott Bonvoy earning at the Ritz-Carlton tier make it the natural pick for Bonvoy members. The honest caveat is character: this is polished, brand-standard luxury rather than the barefoot, owner-run intimacy some Maldives regulars prefer.
Best room: the three-bedroom Ritz-Carlton Estate, the overwater flagship
"Kerry Hill's last Maldives plan and the most architecturally disciplined Ritz-Carlton in the brand's portfolio, a circular master-island that turned the standard linear-jetty Maldives layout on its head, four signature restaurants, and the first overwater Ritz-Carlton Spa pavilion."
The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands opened on 1 June 2021 as Marriott's flagship Maldives property and the second resort on the Fari Islands master-plan (after Patina, opened May 2021). The architecture is by Kerry Hill Architects, the late Singaporean firm behind Aman Tokyo, Aman Kyoto, the Datai Langkawi, the Cheval Blanc Randheli, and the Aman New York interiors collaboration with Jean-Michel Gathy. Kerry Hill himself died in 2018, and the Fari Islands resort is one of the last projects he personally led; it carries the firm's signature minimalism, restrained colour palette, deep eaves, generous structural rhythms, and a deliberate refusal of ornament.
The most distinctive feature is the circular master-island form. Where almost every Maldivian resort uses a linear or boomerang jetty arrangement to maximise overwater frontage, Fari Islands' Ritz-Carlton sits on a fully circular artificial island with public facilities radiating from a central plaza and the 60 over-water villas extending in two crescents from the north and south arcs. The 40 beach villas line the inner ring on a planted ribbon. The result is the most communal layout in any Maldives luxury resort, the resort centre feels like a small piazza rather than a long arrival walkway, and the public areas are concentrated rather than dispersed.
The four signature restaurants split distinct registers without overlap. Summer Pavilion is the resort's Cantonese flagship, chef Han Yang's twin to the Singapore Ritz-Carlton's three-Michelin-star Summer Pavilion, the only Maldivian Cantonese kitchen at this calibre. Iwau is the Japanese sushi-and-teppanyaki counter on the marina-side. La Locanda is the Italian fine-dining room with a wood-fired pizza oven and a 200-bottle Italian list. Eau Bar is the cocktail bar with a curated rum-and-Aragu programme. The fifth, casual venue is Beach Shack, the all-day pool restaurant. The Ritz-Carlton Spa, set on its own overwater pavilion separate from the main island, has nine treatment rooms including the brand's first overwater couples-suite at this calibre, and a hammam with traditional Moroccan-style Kessa exfoliation.
The 100 villas are the largest entry-category in the Maldives, 138 sqm minimum for a Beach Pool Villa, 195 sqm for an Overwater Pool Villa, with private pools across every category. The villa interiors continue Kerry Hill's restraint: smoked-oak, white plaster, woven cane, off-white sailcloth, and Soane Britain rattan. The Ritz-Carlton Estate (the property's flagship overwater unit) is 433 sqm with three bedrooms, a private overwater pool, and a private beach pavilion accessed by a separate boat. Transfers from Malé use a 45-minute speedboat or 15-minute seaplane. The resort shares the Fari Marina Village with neighbouring Patina Maldives and the under-construction Capella, with cross-property dining and retail open to all three resorts' guests.
An Overwater Pool Villa on the southern crescent (the sunset side), Summer Pavilion's tasting menu on arrival night, the overwater Ritz-Carlton Spa couples-suite, and a sunrise breakfast in the villa. The circular geometry means the spa pavilion and main piazza feel destination-distinct on the same island, the rare Maldives layout that has both the social and the secluded register on a single resort.
Two-Bedroom Beach Pool Villas, the Ritz Kids programme calibrated to Marriott's reliable global standard, a circular reef-walk that's child-safe, and the Beach Shack at lunch. The flat circular plan means children can move between villa, kids' club, and pool without long jetty walks, the most family-practical Maldives layout.
For the milestone anniversary the Ritz-Carlton Estate is the once-in-a-lifetime category, with private boat transfer to its own beach pavilion and a personal chef. For an annual anniversary an Overwater Pool Villa with the Summer Pavilion private dinner is the calibrated answer.

Editorial · #11 on the Top 20 Hotels in the Maldives 2026 list
The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands' case for the Maldives stay is the Marriott Bonvoy points-earning combined with the Kerry Hill architecture. The 2021 property is designed by Kerry Hill Architects (one of the most architecturally significant practices in Asian luxury hospitality).
The 100 villas across the property include the Three-Bedroom Estate at 2,200 sqm (the multigenerational signature accommodation), the Beach Pool Villa, and the Over-Water Villa with Pool.
The dining roster includes Summer Pavilion (Cantonese with a Singapore sister), La Locanda (Italian), and Beach Shack on the property's beach. The Ritz-Carlton Spa across the over-water spa pavilion (a Tao Ma-designed jellyfish-shaped pavilion, the most-photographed spa architecture in the Maldives) runs the wellness anchor. The 45-minute speedboat from Male International (no seaplane required) suits the shorter Maldives trip. The Marriott Bonvoy points-earning at the Ritz-Carlton tier suits the Bonvoy-aligned traveller. The Fari Islands position alongside Patina Maldives gives guests the shared-Marina amenity access. Best for the Marriott Bonvoy Maldives Ritz-Carlton stay.
