The Maldives has 26 atolls. Each has different transfer logistics, reef quality, and resort character. The picks below cover the major atolls with luxury hotels.
The major atolls
Noonu Atoll
Northern atoll. Hosts Soneva Jani and Cheval Blanc Randheli — two of the strongest properties.

North Malé Atoll
Closest to Malé airport. Hosts One&Only Reethi Rah, Coco Bodu Hithi, Naladhu.

Laamu Atoll
Southern atoll. Hosts Six Senses Laamu.
Transfer: 60-min flight + 15-min speedboat. Reef quality: exceptional. Best surf in the country. Best for: surf-focused trips, design-led couples, value-conscious luxury.
South Malé Atoll
Close to Malé airport. Hosts Naladhu, Anantara Veli, several mid-tier resorts.
Transfer: 30-min speedboat. Reef quality: variable. Best for: weekend escape, shorter trips, family travel.
Raa Atoll
Northern atoll. Smaller resort selection.
Transfer: 50-min seaplane. Reef quality: excellent (manta and whale shark sightings). Best for: marine-life-focused trips, repeat Maldives visitors.
How to choose the atoll
Three rules:
Rule 1: match atoll to trip type
Noonu (Soneva Jani, Cheval Blanc) for elite honeymoon. Baa (Soneva Fushi) for marine life. Laamu (Six Senses) for surf or value. North Malé for weekend escape.
Rule 2: consider transfer logistics
The seaplane transfer is part of the experience but adds to the total trip time. Build it in.
Rule 3: longer atoll = more remote = more privacy
The southern atolls (Laamu, Gaafu) are more remote and less crowded than the central atolls (Noonu, Baa, Malé).
How to plan the trip
Three rules:
Rule 1: 7-10 nights minimum
The flight time amortises across longer stays.
Rule 2: villa upgrade matters
Pay for the upgraded villa category. The standard villa is fine; the upgraded villa is the trip.
Rule 3: tell the resort it is a honeymoon
Welcome amenities and decoration follow.
Five rules for Maldives atoll selection
- The atoll choice determines transfer logistics, reef quality, and resort character
- Noonu and Baa atolls have the strongest hotel inventory
- Southern atolls offer more privacy but require longer transfers
- Match atoll to trip purpose
- Multi-resort Maldives trips work well for repeat visitors
