About The Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa

The Twelve Apostles sits on a stretch of Victoria Road south of Camps Bay, on the only piece of cliff between the mountain range it shares its name with — the twelve buttresses of the Atlantic-facing flank of Table Mountain — and the Atlantic Ocean below. The location is geographically singular: there are no neighbours, no roads above, and the mountain's protective ridge above the property creates a microclimate that runs three or four degrees warmer than central Cape Town in summer and shelters the hotel from the south-easter that flattens the city in summer afternoons. From most rooms you see only mountain to the east and ocean to the west.

The hotel was opened in 1999 and has been continuously refurbished by owner Bea Tollman's Red Carnation Hotels group — small, family-run, with the Belmond Vineyard Hotel and Bushmans Kloof in its sister portfolio. The 70 rooms are individually designed and small by modern South African luxury-hotel standards: standard rooms are 33 square metres; Junior Sea-Facing Suites 50 square metres; the One-Bedroom Atlantic Suite, 70 square metres, is the property's signature inventory. The Presidential Suite at 195 square metres is the only multi-room inventory and includes a private terrace, plunge pool, and direct lift access. Décor is Red Carnation's familiar register — hand-painted wallpapers, antique escritoires, four-poster beds — slightly old-fashioned in a way that ages well.

The 16-room spa is the strongest in any Cape Town hotel and is the property's primary draw for repeat guests. Treatment rooms are split between an indoor block (with a hammam, sauna, ice fountain, and the Sanctuary couples' suite — two beds, fireplace, soaking tub, private terrace) and a series of clifftop pavilions where treatments are delivered with the doors open to the Atlantic. The Movement Lab — Pilates, yoga, TRX, the Western Cape's only on-property reformer studio — runs daily classes free for guests. The hotel runs a 'Mindful Retreats' wellness package twice a year (March and September) that combines daily yoga, hiking, nutrition consultations, and a guided detox protocol over four nights.

Two restaurants and a bar handle the dining. Azure, the main fine-dining room, runs a Cape-coastal menu with the Atlantic visible from every table; the wine list is Western Cape-focused with strong Constantia and Stellenbosch verticals. The Café Grill, more relaxed, is the breakfast and lunch room and serves the property's most photographed dish — a kingklip and prawns curry. The Leopard Bar, with banquette seating directly above the cliff, is the sundown room: fire pits, a daily 'sunset chime' tradition, and the city's strongest cocktail programme outside The Silo. The hotel's private dinner setup — a candlelit table on the cliff helipad — is regularly used for proposals.

The location's only weakness is its remoteness. Camps Bay, with its restaurants and beach, is six minutes by hotel car or twelve by foot down the cliff path; the V&A Waterfront is twenty minutes by car; Cape Town International Airport is forty minutes door-to-door. The hotel runs a complimentary shuttle into central Camps Bay every hour and a paid airport transfer in the property's Mercedes V-Class. For guests who want quiet without going to Bantry Bay or the winelands, this is the city's best answer; for guests who want a hotel they can walk out of into a city, it isn't.

Best Occasion Fit

Wellness Retreat

The Twelve Apostles is Cape Town's strongest wellness option. The 16-room spa is the city's best-equipped, the daily complimentary yoga and movement programme runs at six-thirty and four-thirty, the Mindful Retreats package runs twice a year (March/September) with structured nutrition, hiking, and detox protocols over four nights. The clifftop pavilions for outdoor massage are the city's most distinctive treatment rooms — pair with a sunrise hike up the Pipe Track and dinner at Azure for a complete reset.

Honeymoon

An obvious honeymoon answer for couples who want the resort polish of a clifftop position without the airport-distance commitment of Phinda or Sabi Sand. Book a One-Bedroom Atlantic Suite, request the Sanctuary couples' spa session for the second day, have the chef's-table-on-the-helipad dinner on the third evening (proposals are not uncommon there), and pair with three days at One&Only or Mount Nelson for the city portion.

Anniversary

An anniversary choice for couples who would prefer the cliff to the city. The Sanctuary couples' suite, a private dinner on the helipad with the sunset, the Café Grill kingklip-and-prawns the next day at lunch, and a Saturday morning hike up Lion's Head (the start of the path is two minutes from the property) make a textbook anniversary weekend. Quiet, polished, and well-removed from the V&A noise.
