The Silo Hotel opened in March 2017 in a restored 1924 grain silo on the V&A Waterfront's Silo District, above the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA) — Africa's largest contemporary art museum, which occupies the silo's lower nine floors. The hotel occupies floors six to ten of the original silo, plus the rooftop level. The architectural conversion is by Thomas Heatherwick (the designer of London's Vessel and the New Routemaster bus) — his first hotel project — and represents the most distinctive piece of contemporary architecture in any Cape Town luxury hotel.
The 28 rooms — including 22 standard rooms and six suites — feature Heatherwick's signature pillowed bay windows: hexagonal glass panels that bulge outward from the silo's circular concrete walls and produce the most distinctive view of any Cape Town hotel, with the harbour, Table Mountain, and the Atlantic Ocean visible from different rooms. Every room has been individually designed by Royal Portfolio's Liz Biden (the South African designer behind several of the country's most distinctive luxury hotels), with bespoke furniture, curated South African art, and a colour palette specific to the room's view.
The grounds are the rooftop pool deck — the property's most photographed feature — with a heated pool, the rooftop bar, and 360-degree views of Cape Town from the harbour to Table Mountain.
