The Hotel

The Mount Nelson Hotel opened in March 1899 in the Gardens area of Cape Town below Table Mountain — built specifically as the city's first luxury hotel for the Union-Castle Line passengers arriving by ship from London — and has been continuously operated as a luxury hotel for 126 years. The property's iconic pink-painted exterior was applied in 1918 and has been maintained as the hotel's defining visual signature ever since. Belmond (LVMH's heritage-hotel collection) acquired the property in 2014 and has invested heavily in restoration while preserving every period detail.

The 198 rooms split between the original 1899 main building (with original parquet, period furniture, Cape colonial detailing), the cottage accommodations spread through the 9-acre gardens, and the more contemporary garden-side wings added in the 1990s and refurbished by Belmond. The Garden Cottages — small cottage-style accommodations in the gardens — are the property's most romantic category. The Helmsley Suites and Garden View Junior Suites in the main building are the most-requested mid-tier.

The grounds — 9 acres of gardens running from the main building to Mount Nelson Park — are the property's defining asset. The two heated swimming pools, the tennis courts, the Librisa Spa, and the gardens themselves (with mature jacaranda trees, palm groves, and the original 1899 wisteria) provide the property's centre of activity. The afternoon tea tradition — running daily in the Lord Nelson Restaurant since 1899 — is one of South Africa's most established hotel-dining institutions.

Dining is at three main restaurants. Lord Nelson is the historic main restaurant in the original Belle Époque building. Planet Bar & Restaurant is the more contemporary outdoor terrace. The Pool Cabana serves casual lunches by the pool. The wine programme — heavily Cape, Stellenbosch, and Constantia-focused — is among the deepest hotel cellars in South Africa. Service is the consistent Belmond standard delivered by a heavily Capetonian team that has, in many cases, been with the property for decades. Mount Nelson is the historic Cape Town luxury answer for travellers who want the grande-dame setting and the Belmond heritage discipline.

Best Occasion Fit

Anniversary

The Cape Town anniversary at Mount Nelson. Book a Garden Cottage for the privacy and the period romance, or a Helmsley Suite in the main building for the historic-room experience. The Lord Nelson dinner, the afternoon tea tradition (a particular Mount Nelson moment), and the gardens combine into a Cape Town anniversary stay with 126 years of accumulated memory.

Honeymoon

The Cape Town honeymoon for couples who want the historic-pink-hotel-with-gardens experience. Mount Nelson's location in the Gardens area is closer to the city centre than the V&A Waterfront and within easy taxi distance of Table Mountain, Camps Bay, and the Atlantic Seaboard. Book a Garden Cottage. The combination of historic architecture, the gardens, the afternoon tea, and the Belmond service produces a textured Cape Town honeymoon.

Family Holiday

Mount Nelson's 9-acre gardens, the two pools, the tennis courts, and the family-configurable rooms in the cottage and Garden Wing accommodations make it one of the more family-luxury Cape Town options. The kids' programme runs during peak season. The Gardens area is safe and walkable for older children.
