Honeymoon Anniversary Business Five-Star

"The white façade on Kongens Nytorv has anchored the Danish capital since 1755. Marchal holds the Michelin star; the Champagne Bar is the city's evening; the Tower Suite is the only hotel suite in Copenhagen with a private rooftop terrace over the square. Copenhagen's most complete grand hotel."

The Hotel

Hotel d'Angleterre traces its founding to 1755, when Jean Marchal — the French servant who married royal chef Jakob Coppy's daughter Maria — opened a small dining house and inn at the corner of Kongens Nytorv. The property has been continuously operating as a hotel ever since, has been rebuilt twice (after the city fire of 1795 and again in 1875), and was acquired in 2010 by the Maccaferri family of Bologna and brought into a substantial restoration that took it from a tired grande dame back to the most decorated luxury address in Northern Europe. The current building, by Vilhelm Dahlerup, is a white neoclassical block of seven storeys with a square-front presence on Kongens Nytorv that defines this side of the city.

The 92 rooms and suites are arranged across the historic square-front building and the wing facing Hovedvagtsgade. Entry-level Superior Rooms run to 30 square metres; the Deluxe and Premier Rooms to 40 square metres; the named suites (the Royal, the Tower, the Hans Christian Andersen, the Karen Blixen) are among the largest in the city. The Tower Suite occupies the corner of the building's top floor and includes a private rooftop terrace overlooking Kongens Nytorv and the Royal Danish Theatre — the only hotel rooftop view in central Copenhagen with this exposure. Rooms facing Kongens Nytorv look across to the Royal Danish Theatre, Charlottenborg, and the entrance to Nyhavn; rooms on the Hovedvagtsgade side face the Magasin du Nord and are quieter.

Marchal — named for the founder, opened in the lobby in 2013 — holds a Michelin star under chef Jakob de Neergaard. The kitchen runs a French-Nordic register: the menu reads as Brittany lobster, Anjou pigeon, Lysekil oysters, but the techniques and the produce sourcing are Danish. Lunch is one of Copenhagen's most reliable working tables; the dégustation menu in the evening is the most decorated hotel kitchen in Denmark. The Champagne Bar — the long marble counter that runs the lobby's right-hand wall — is the most consistently busy hotel bar in Copenhagen at any given evening hour and the city's most reliable place to stop in for a single glass without a reservation. Balthazar, the wine bar facing Kongens Nytorv, is the third dining venue and the address for a less formal evening.

The basement holds Amazing Space — a 350-square-metre spa with a 13-metre indoor pool, a steam room, a sauna, and the city's most considered massage and treatment menu. The fitness centre is open 24 hours. The Tivoli Christmas market sets up across the square in late November; the d'Angleterre's traditional façade lights and Christmas tree on Kongens Nytorv are themselves one of the most photographed Danish hospitality images of the year. The Maccaferri restoration was extensive: every room has been gutted and rebuilt; the lobby, the staircases, the public rooms have been brought back to a level the hotel had not held in fifty years. By any honest contemporary measure, Hotel d'Angleterre is now the best hotel in Copenhagen, and one of the strongest grand-hotel restorations completed in Northern Europe in the past two decades.

Best Occasion Fit

Honeymoon

For Copenhagen honeymoons the d'Angleterre is the obvious answer. The combination is rare: a 270-year continuous-operation address, a Michelin-starred kitchen on site, the Champagne Bar in the lobby, the indoor pool downstairs, and the Tower Suite or Royal Suite for guests who want a single decisive booking. The concierge runs the city's strongest restaurant book — Geranium, Alchemist, Jordnær, Kong Hans Kælder all reachable here — and the Tivoli Gardens are five minutes' walk away. Mention what is being celebrated at booking; the hotel handles honeymoons reflexively.

Anniversary

An anniversary at the d'Angleterre can be calibrated at multiple intensities — the Hans Christian Andersen Suite for a quieter celebration; the Tower Suite with the rooftop terrace for a milestone year; a private chef's-table dinner at Marchal arranged through the concierge for the evening itself. The hotel handles every variant of the same brief reflexively, and the historical density of the address (the Andersen connection, the royal warrant, the 270-year continuity) gives the city anniversary a depth no Copenhagen contemporary can match.

Business

For Copenhagen business stays at the level where the lobby-as-meeting-room matters, the d'Angleterre is the only address. The lobby is the city's most reliable place to take a coffee meeting; the meeting suites at the rear of the property handle small board meetings; Marchal at lunchtime is the city's most decorated business kitchen. The position on Kongens Nytorv puts most of the city's law firms, the Royal Danish Theatre, and Magasin du Nord within three minutes' walk; the M3 Cityringen line at Kongens Nytorv connects to Central Station in five minutes.
