The Hotel

Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc opened in 1870 on the tip of Cap d'Antibes, a 22-acre wooded cape extending into the Mediterranean between Cannes and Nice, and is the property that essentially defined the Côte d'Azur luxury-hotel category. The main hotel building dates from 1870 and was originally called the Villa Soleil; the iconic Eden-Roc pavilion at the cliff edge — with the Eden-Roc seawater pool carved directly into the rock and replenished by Mediterranean tides — was added in 1914 and remains the property's defining architectural element.

The 117 rooms and suites split between the main hotel (the historic 1870 building, with the bulk of the rooms) and the Eden-Roc pavilion at the cliff (with the most-coveted suites overlooking the seawater pool and the Mediterranean). Every room has been continuously refurbished over the property's 155-year history; the current iteration retains period detail while integrating contemporary luxury bathrooms and beds. The Bellevue Suites — the largest, with private terraces over the Mediterranean — are the property's flagship category.

The 22-acre cape is the property's defining asset. The grounds run from the main hotel down through pine forest to the Eden-Roc pavilion at the water's edge, with the Eden-Roc seawater pool, the cabanas, the cliff diving boards (the same ones in the property's pre-war photographs), the Champagne Lounge, and the Eden-Roc Restaurant. The rest of the cape — gardens, tennis courts, the wine cellar — is for guest use. The property is a working private cape rather than a hotel that sits on one.

The hotel was famously cash-only for over a century — guests left their gold watches as deposit until the bill was paid in cash on departure — and only began accepting credit cards in 2006. The May Cannes Film Festival residency, when the hotel becomes effectively a Hollywood-Cannes campus for two weeks, has been an annual fixture since the festival's founding in 1946. The Eden-Roc Restaurant has hosted the kind of guest list (Picasso, Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Marlene Dietrich, JFK, Bono, the Beckhams) that essentially constitutes the cultural history of the Riviera. Service is the institutional standard of a property that has been refining the same hospitality philosophy for 155 years. This is the Riviera's defining grande dame.

Best Occasion Fit

Anniversary

The Riviera anniversary hotel. Hotel du Cap handles vow renewals at the cliff-side terrace, private dinners at the Eden-Roc pavilion, and milestone arrangements with the precision that 155 years of operation provides. Book a Bellevue Suite or one of the Eden-Roc pavilion suites for the cliff view. The anniversary at Hotel du Cap is the photographable, unforgettable, historically-anchored kind.

Honeymoon

The Riviera honeymoon for couples who want the historic version. The Eden-Roc pool at sunrise; the cliff-diving boards (still in use); private dinner at the Eden-Roc Restaurant; the Champagne Lounge in the evening. The combination of the 22-acre cape, the Eden-Roc seawater pool, and the property's century-and-a-half of Hollywood-and-literary memory produces the most layered Riviera honeymoon.

Proposal

The Eden-Roc cliff terrace at sunset is one of the Riviera's most photographed proposal locations. The hotel arranges this with the discretion of an institution that has hosted many such moments. The Champagne Lounge with the cape's pine forest behind and the Mediterranean below; or a dinner at the Eden-Roc Restaurant with the cliff at your table. If you propose at Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc and she says no, the hotel staff will pretend the moment did not happen, which is an act of mercy.
