"Greenwich's answer to a Manhattan design hotel without the Manhattan price tag. The Art Deco shell, the in-room iPads, the contemporary room product, all sit four minutes from the Riverside station and the rest of the town."

The Hotel

J House opened in 2012 as the first new-build luxury hotel in Greenwich in a generation, on a four-acre site at the Riverside end of East Putnam Avenue, three minutes' drive east of Greenwich Avenue and 400 feet from the Riverside Metro-North platform. The building is a contemporary reading of Art Deco: a slate-grey limestone shell, vertical bronze fluting, a porte-cochere lit from below at night, and a stepped four-storey massing that reads as 1930s Park Avenue translated to suburban Connecticut. The owners, the Jaeger family, ran it as a single-property hotel for the first decade and added a second site in Greenwich Village in 2024.

The 86 rooms and suites are arranged across four floors, with standard categories running from 380 to 450 square feet, considerably larger than the Greenwich norm. The fit-out is contemporary rather than period: white oak floors, light grey upholstery, custom Italian-made desks, and bathrooms in honed Carrara with rain showers and free-standing tubs in upper categories. Every room carries an in-room iPad that controls lighting, climate, and the entertainment system, a Nespresso machine, a small Bowers & Wilkins sound system, and free 200-Mbps WiFi. The Presidential Suite holds two bedrooms, a private outdoor deck, and a full kitchen.

The dining offer is JHouse Restaurant, a 90-seat all-day Italian-American room with an open kitchen and a serious wine programme run by an in-house master sommelier. The cooking is precise and seasonal; breakfast and lunch carry the property's commuter set and the dinner room holds up against any restaurant in Greenwich proper. The Lobby Bar runs as a quieter cocktail room with a small bar menu until 11pm. The spa, on the lower ground floor, runs four treatment rooms and a couples' suite, and the 24-hour fitness centre carries current Technogym equipment.

Service is a generation younger than at the Homestead or Delamar, and the result is a more flexible operation: 24-hour room service, on-property valet parking, a dedicated business floor with a small lounge, and an in-house concierge fluent in Manhattan logistics. The hotel runs at high occupancy for corporate travel during the week (Mastercard, Synchrony, and a long list of hedge funds keep a steady booking) and pivots to anniversary and family bookings at weekends. The Riverside Metro-North station is a four-minute walk and runs to Grand Central in 47 minutes; for clients arriving by car, the property is six minutes from I-95 exit 5.

Best Occasion Fit

Business

For business in Greenwich proper, the J House is the most efficient overnight option. The Riverside Metro-North station is 400 feet away with a 47-minute run to Grand Central; the in-room workspace is the largest in the market; and the dedicated business floor runs a quiet lounge, a small board room, and a concierge for car bookings. The restaurant at 7am is reliable for client breakfast.

Anniversary

An anniversary at the J House works because the property is the only Greenwich hotel with a contemporary room product at a contemporary price point. Book a Junior Suite for two nights, book the spa together, and request the corner banquette in the restaurant; the operations team will discount the room rate on a third night if you ask politely. The Presidential Suite is the upgrade for major years.
