Grand Hotel Tremezzo opened on May 10, 1910 in Tremezzina on the western shore of Lake Como, designed in the Belle Époque style and built directly across from Bellagio's promontory. The hotel survived the two world wars, the Italian fascist period, and the difficult interwar years for European luxury hotels, and has been owned by the De Santis family — the same family that opened Passalacqua in 2022 — since 1975. Three generations of De Santis stewardship have produced a property where every detail has been considered, refined, and re-considered.
The 90 rooms and suites split between the original Belle Époque main building (with original parquet, period furniture, and lake-view balconies), the lakeside Villa Sola Cabiati addition (with more contemporary suites), and the new Sun Tower extension (which added rooms in 2017 without compromising the Belle Époque silhouette). The Maria Callas Penthouse Suite — the property's flagship — is named for the soprano who lived at the hotel for several stays in the 1950s and is the largest suite, with private terrace and lake views in three directions.
The property's most photographed feature is the floating pool — a wooden-decked pool platform on the lake's surface, anchored to the shore, with the lake water visible directly through the gap between pool and shore. The T Spa is one of the larger luxury hotel spas on Lake Como, with a comprehensive treatment menu and the ESPA partnership. The gardens behind the property climb up the slope and include the original 1910 promenade with cypresses, lemon trees, and the wedding chapel.
Dining is at four restaurants, all under one chef. La Terrazza is the lakefront fine-dining restaurant. L'Escale Trattoria & Bar is the casual all-day. T Pizza is the more recent pizzeria addition. T Beach is the floating-pool restaurant. The chef's brigade, run by the long-serving Gualtiero Marchesi-trained kitchen team, has earned multiple recognitions over the years. The wine programme is shared with Passalacqua and runs deep on Italian whites and reds. Service is the De Santis family standard — the same standard now refined further at Passalacqua — and Tremezzo represents the more accessibly-priced version of the De Santis hospitality philosophy.
The Lake Como anniversary for couples who want the Belle Époque drama and the De Santis service at a slightly more accessible rate than Passalacqua. Book a Lake View suite in the original Belle Époque building. The Maria Callas Penthouse for milestone anniversaries. La Terrazza handles anniversary dinners with 115 years of muscle memory.
The Lake Como honeymoon for couples who want the historic version. The 1910 architecture, the floating pool at sunset, the gardens, and the De Santis service standard combine into one of Italy's most established honeymoon experiences. Book a Lake View suite in the main building. The boat trips to Bellagio and Varenna are arranged in-house.
Tremezzo is the family-luxury Lake Como answer. The Sun Tower contains the larger family-configurable rooms. The Tremezzo Kids' Club runs a programme of Italian-language activities and pool/lake-based fun. The pool deck has dedicated kids' areas and adult-only zones. T Beach restaurant is family-friendly. The polished family Lake Como hotel.
