Four Seasons Hotel Ritz Lisbon

Opened in 1959 as Portugal's first true luxury hotel, restored under Four Seasons stewardship in 2005, and still the city's most decorated address. The art collection, the kitchen, and the service are each at a level no other Lisbon hotel has matched.

The Hotel

Hotel Ritz Lisbon opened on 21 September 1959 as the largest and most ambitious commission of Portuguese modernist architecture in the post-war Salazar period. The brief — issued personally by António de Oliveira Salazar — was to give Lisbon a hotel that could host visiting heads of state at a level the city had not previously offered. The architects (Pardal Monteiro, Porfírio Pardal Monteiro, and Jorge Ferreira Chaves) produced a long, low, ten-storey building in stripped Portuguese modernism, faced in marble, set on Praça Marquês de Pombal at the head of the Avenida da Liberdade and looking directly down across Parque Eduardo VII to the Tagus. It opened as a hotel, was placed under Four Seasons management in 2005, and underwent a multi-year restoration under the Four Seasons standard.

The 282 guest rooms and suites are unusually generous by central-Lisbon standards — entry-level Deluxe Rooms run to 40 square metres and even the smallest categories include separate dressing areas, marble bathrooms, and the building's signature private balconies. The Avenida-side rooms look down across Parque Eduardo VII to the Tagus; the courtyard rooms face the building's interior gardens, are quieter, and are the better choice for guests who want to keep the curtains open in the morning. The Royal Suite, the Presidential Suite, and the Almada Negreiros Suite (named for the modernist painter whose tapestries hang in the lobby) are among the largest hotel suites in Lisbon.

The hotel's contemporary art collection is the under-discussed feature — over a thousand pieces commissioned from Portuguese 20th-century masters (Almada Negreiros, Pedro Roldão, Carlos Botelho, Jorge Vieira) for the original 1959 opening, and now considered a museum-grade collection in its own right. The corridors and public rooms function as a small private gallery; the hotel runs occasional curator-led tours for guests. CURA — the in-house tasting-menu restaurant under chef Pedro Pena Bastos — holds a Michelin star and is on most short lists for Lisbon's most accomplished hotel kitchen. Varanda, the all-day restaurant, runs a celebrated weekend brunch and a lunch buffet that the city's lawyers and bankers treat as a working canteen. The Almada Negreiros Bar runs a cocktail programme led by some of the most decorated bartenders in Portuguese hospitality.

The pool is on the rooftop — a small heated outdoor pool with cabanas, a jogging track around the perimeter, and a 360-degree view across Lisbon to the Tagus. The spa, on the lower floor, is among the larger hotel spas in central Lisbon and runs a serious treatment menu using Portuguese marine ingredients. Four Seasons Hotel Ritz Lisbon is, by general critical consensus, the best hotel in Portugal and one of the brand's strongest properties on the Iberian Peninsula. It is the address every Lisbon-bound Hollywood production, every visiting head of state, and most of the city's most demanding repeat-visit corporate guests choose by default.

Best Occasion Fit

Honeymoon

For Lisbon honeymoons, Four Seasons Ritz combines what no other city hotel offers: the museum-grade art collection, the Michelin-starred CURA tasting menu, the rooftop pool with the Tagus view, the spa, and the kind of service that recognises what is being celebrated without being asked. An Avenida-facing suite, a CURA tasting menu booking, an afternoon at the spa, and the concierge's relationships with the city's best private fado venues produce a week that does not require negotiation. Mention what you are celebrating at booking — the property is one of the strongest in the Four Seasons portfolio for honeymoon recognition.

Business

For Lisbon business stays — particularly Web Summit week or any meeting at the level where the lobby-as-meeting-room matters — the Ritz is the address. The lobby alone closes deals; the meeting rooms are at the Four Seasons standard; the Varanda weekday lunch is the city's most reliable venue for working tables. The position at Marquês de Pombal puts most of Lisbon's law firms, embassies, and corporate addresses within five minutes by taxi.

Anniversary

An anniversary at the Ritz Lisbon can be programmed at multiple intensity levels — the Royal Suite for a milestone year, an Avenida-view Deluxe Premier for a quieter celebration, a private tasting at CURA for the evening itself. The hotel handles every variant of the same brief reflexively, and the Portuguese national-art context (the corridors as gallery, the modernist building as itself a heritage object) gives the city anniversary a depth that most contemporary five-stars cannot match.
