Avenida da Liberdade, Lisbon  ·  Five-Star  ·  #2 in Lisbon

Tivoli Avenida Liberdade Lisboa

A Lisbon icon since 1933 — the hotel that taught the city what a grand hotel was, restored under Anantara stewardship, and still the most centrally located five-star on the Avenida da Liberdade.

Anniversary Business Honeymoon Five-Star Historic/Heritage

"Lisbon's grand hotel since 1933, on the Avenida da Liberdade, with the city's most reliably busy rooftop bar and a garden pool that no other central five-star can match. The address that the city's diplomatic and corporate guests choose by default."

The Hotel

Hotel Tivoli opened on the Avenida da Liberdade in 1933 as a Portuguese-owned answer to the grand hotels of Paris, Madrid, and Rome — at a moment when the Avenida itself was being established as Lisbon's most prestigious boulevard. It was designed by Raul Tojal and Aníbal Galvão Mexia, and remains the largest pre-war hotel building on the Avenida; the original façade and the marble lobby are intact. The hotel was acquired by Minor Hotels (the parent of Anantara) in 2015 and underwent a four-year restoration completed in 2019, which preserved the heritage envelope and substantially upgraded the rooms, the spa, and the rooftop.

The 285 guest rooms and suites occupy nine floors and are positioned in three configurations: Avenida-facing rooms (looking out across Lisbon's most prestigious boulevard, with the city traffic and the city's life as the soundtrack), garden-facing rooms (quieter, looking down into the Tivoli Garden — a working pool and palm garden that very few central Lisbon hotels match), and the upper-floor Liberdade and Tivoli Suites (the most desirable, with views toward the Tagus). The Anantara Suite, on the seventh floor, is the largest in the building and the address several visiting heads of state have used.

The dining is at three levels. Cervejaria Liberdade, on the lobby floor, is the most reliable Portuguese seafood kitchen at the five-star level in the city — bivalve programmes from the Algarve, a working raw bar, and the kind of unaffected service that the local lawyers and bankers come for. Sky Bar by SEEN, on the rooftop, is among the city's most established sundowner addresses; the cocktail programme is at international standard and the view across the Avenida and the Tagus is the city's signature. Café Bistrô handles the all-day programme and the morning breakfast. The Anantara Spa — at 800 square metres, one of the larger central-Lisbon hotel spas — runs a serious treatment menu and has built a meaningful following among local clients in addition to hotel guests.

The Tivoli is the most centrally located of Lisbon's grand five-stars — directly on the Avenida, two minutes from the Avenida metro stop, three minutes' walk from the Hard Rock corner, fifteen minutes' walk to either Restauradores or the Marquês de Pombal end. For guests for whom the position on the Avenida is the point — diplomatic visitors, the legal and corporate guests, the regional fashion buyers in Lisbon for Portugal Fashion — the Tivoli is the default address. Its competitors in central Lisbon are the Four Seasons Ritz at the head of the Avenida (more decorated, slightly removed from the boulevard itself) and the Heritage Avenida Liberdade three blocks south (smaller, more discreet).

Best Occasion Fit

Anniversary

For Lisbon anniversaries the Tivoli's appeal is the historic envelope and the sense of being at the centre of the city's evening — Sky Bar before dinner, a Cervejaria Liberdade table at the level the kitchen earns, the slow walk back through the Avenida's plane trees to the suite. The garden pool is an unexpected daytime amenity for an anniversary city stay; ask for a Tivoli Suite for the Tagus angle.

Business

For business stays in Lisbon, the Tivoli is the most operationally efficient five-star — the meeting rooms are right-sized, the lobby is the most reliable place in central Lisbon for an ad hoc working coffee, and the position on the Avenida puts most of the city's law firms, embassies, and corporate offices within ten minutes on foot. Web Summit week books out months in advance.

Honeymoon

A Tivoli honeymoon is the city-immersion answer — the whole city is a five-minute walk from the lobby, the rooftop is the city's evening, and the spa is a serious thing on the rainy days. Less seclusion than Pestana Palace or Olissippo Lapa Palace, more central energy than either; the right pick for couples for whom the city itself is the experience.
