The Hotel

Faraway Nantucket sits at 1 North Beach Street on Sparks Avenue — six minutes' walk from Steamship Wharf, eight minutes' walk from Main Street, and on the village-edge stretch of Sparks Avenue between the historic core and the Madaket Road that runs west toward the island's outer beaches. The property occupies a restored 1856 wooden Nantucket inn (one of the village's smaller-footprint heritage hotels, originally built as the Roberts House and operated as a small boarding-house through the late 19th and 20th centuries) that Lark Hotels Group acquired in 2017 for its first Nantucket property. The 18-month restoration committed by Lark Hotels' Brooklyn-based interior team Studio Robert McKinley reopened the property as Faraway Nantucket in summer 2018.

The 31 keys run across the restored 1856 main inn building plus a small contemporary garden-cottage block added during the 2017-2018 restoration. Categories run from entry-tier Standard Rooms (22 sqm, the smaller-footprint heritage rooms) through Premium Rooms (28 sqm, courtyard or pool-facing) to the named Faraway Suite (45 sqm, top-floor with private balcony). The interior register is the Lark Hotels-curated contemporary-coastal-design vocabulary applied to the heritage envelope — pale-natural-wood furniture by the Hudson-Valley artisan workshop programme, hand-loomed wool textiles, custom-made driftwood lighting fixtures, and the deliberate decision to lean into a design-hotel register rather than a contemporary-cottage-coastal one.

Operationally Faraway Nantucket runs the small-design-hotel village-edge register. The Faraway Restaurant is the in-house all-day venue running the contemporary-American register that the Lark Hotels kitchen team has built across the group's New England portfolio (the group's other properties are the 76 Main and Bluewater Inn on Cape Cod, the Highlights Inn in Cambridge, and the Awosting Reserve in the Catskills). The property's heated outdoor pool — a small-footprint pool at the rear of the property, opened during the 2018 restoration — is the village-edge alternative to White Elephant's harbour-front pool, the only village-area Nantucket luxury pool inside walking distance of Main Street.

What gives Faraway Nantucket the considered Nantucket-village-edge position is the design-hotel-and-pool combination at smaller-footprint scale and substantially lower rate than the harbour-front White Elephant. The 31-key footprint is mid-scale (smaller than White Elephant or The Nantucket Hotel; larger than Greydon House); the village-edge position keeps the walking-distance proposition to Main Street, the Whaling Museum, and Steamship Wharf while giving the property the small-residential-block quietness that the harbour-front cluster cannot match. For a Nantucket honeymoon that wants the design-hotel register over the larger grande-dame scale, an anniversary that takes the village-edge quietness and the property's heated pool as the structural daily anchors, or a multi-night Nantucket stay that prefers a more-accessible rate point than White Elephant or the Wauwinet, Faraway is the most-considered choice.
