The Hotel

Bernardus Lodge & Spa opened in 1999 at 415 West Carmel Valley Road — fifteen miles inland from Pebble Beach in the heart of Carmel Valley's Bernardus Vineyards estate, in the warm-microclimate wine-growing pocket of the Salinas Valley that produces the Monterey County's most acclaimed Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and red Bordeaux blends. The Lodge was developed by Dutch-American philanthropist and former Olympic equestrian Bernardus 'Ben' Pon as the hospitality anchor of his Bernardus Vineyards programme; the property has been continuously operated under the Bernardus brand and has held its position as Carmel Valley's senior luxury retreat across two-and-a-half decades.

The 73 rooms span Premium Garden Rooms (the entry inventory, on the first floor with oversized patios opening onto the lodge's landscaped grounds), Romantic Spa Rooms (the property's signature category — every room with a private garden patio, an outdoor hot tub, and direct views of the rose garden, the estate vineyard, and the Santa Lucia mountains beyond), Valley Villa Suites and Vineyard Villa Suites (1,050-square-foot villa-style accommodations on the upper floor with vaulted ceilings, French doors opening to balconies with fireplaces and Carmel Valley views, and fireplaces in the living room, bedroom, and terrace). Every room has the Lodge's signature in-room Bernardus Vineyards welcome programme.

The 5,300-square-foot spa is the property's amenity ace — seven treatment rooms with several outdoor treatment options, a warming room, eucalyptus steam room, and an adult-only spa area with a 100-degree pool that runs year-round (one of the warmest hotel pools in the Monterey region). Lucia restaurant — the property's flagship contemporary American kitchen — runs a strong farm-to-table programme with wines from the Bernardus Vineyards and the broader Monterey wine programme; the Wickets bistro handles all-day breakfast and lunch; the Library handles afternoon tea and evening cocktails. The Pétanque court and the croquet lawn are the warm-afternoon activities; Bernardus Vineyards tasting room (in the village of Carmel Valley Village two minutes' drive) handles the wine programme.

The position is the second commercial pillar. Carmel Valley's wine-and-mountain-pocket position fifteen miles inland from Pebble Beach gives the Lodge a meaningfully different atmosphere from the coast: warmer microclimate (Carmel Valley runs 10–15°F warmer than the Pebble Beach coast through summer), a quieter evening cadence, and a vineyards-and-mountain backdrop rather than the cove-and-ocean Pebble Beach iconography. Pebble Beach is twenty minutes by car; Carmel-by-the-Sea is fifteen; Big Sur is fifty-five; the Monterey Regional Airport is thirty.
