The Hotel

The Quail Lodge sits at 8205 Valley Greens Drive in Carmel Valley, a fifteen-minute drive inland from Carmel-by-the-Sea via Carmel Valley Road. The property dates to 1964 — the original Quail Lodge was developed by Edward Haber on the site of the former Carmel Valley Dairy — and the 18-hole Robert Muir Graves golf course was completed in 1965. The course was reworked by Casey O'Callaghan in 2014 and has held its position as one of the better playable resort courses on the Monterey Peninsula. The property was acquired by Hong Kong-based Peninsula Hotels parent The Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels Limited (the Kadoorie family company) in 1997 and operated as a Peninsula resort until 2009; the present owners — the Berkshire-based group with broad California hospitality holdings — acquired it in 2013 and rebranded the property simply as "The Quail" in 2018, then to "The Quail Lodge & Golf Club" in 2022 when the Forbes Travel Guide recognition was reinstated.

The 93 rooms are bungalow-style — single-storey, predominantly garden-view, organised in low clusters across the 850-acre property. The categories run from Bungalow Deluxe King (the entry category, around 350 square feet, with a king bed, gas fireplace, and patio onto the gardens) through the Bungalow Suite categories with separate sitting rooms, up to the Quail Suite at 1,400 square feet with a private outdoor patio overlooking the 18th green. Every room has a gas fireplace, every room has a patio or balcony, every room has refreshed bathroom hardware following the 2022 renovation. There are no high-rise floors here, no elevator queues, no lobby dynamic — the lodge architecture is genuinely ranch-resort, and the property's quiet is the proposition.

Quail's substantive identity is its alignment with Pebble Beach Concours week. Every August, on the Friday of Concours week, the property hosts The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering — the elite-status invitation-only counterpart to the Sunday-on-the-fairway Concours d'Elegance — with roughly 5,000 attendees, several hundred display cars, the most-photographed motorsports executive briefcase circulation in the world, and rates that move into four-figure territory. For the other 51 weeks of the year, the lodge is a working golf-and-conference resort with strong family-holiday infrastructure: 850 acres, four miles of walking and bike trails, an outdoor pool with a poolside bar, four pickleball and four tennis courts, and the 18-hole golf course that anchors the rate. Edgar's Restaurant in the clubhouse runs an American-Mediterranean menu; The Lounge by the lobby runs the day; the Waypoint Beverage Cart works the course.

Carmel Valley is the Monterey Peninsula's sun corridor — fifteen minutes inland from the coastal fog line, often 15–20 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than Carmel-by-the-Sea, and the reason this is the working board-offsite address. The conference floor handles 250 capacity in the Lodge Ballroom, plus seven smaller meeting rooms; AV is current; the inland-valley quiet means tech offsites can run from a single bungalow cluster. For families travelling with school-age children who want a Monterey Peninsula trip with a swimming pool that's actually warm and a course where dad can play a morning round while the kids ride the bike trails, the Quail is the only address that solves the brief.
