"The art-school five-star — every room a different painter, every floor a different decade. The Mendes kitchen is the dinner answer; the river-facing infinity pool is the mid-afternoon answer."

The Hotel

Torel Avantgarde is the Massarelos-riverbank boutique five-star opened in June 2018 by the Torel Boutiques group — the small Porto-and-Lisbon collection founded in 2014 by the Coelho family — as their flagship Porto property. The address is on Rua da Restauração above the Douro at Massarelos, between the Crystal Palace gardens uphill and the river-walk downhill, two kilometres west of the Ribeira; the building is a contemporary structure built into the slope so that every guest balcony reads east toward the working port lodges of Vila Nova de Gaia opposite. The architectural and curatorial decision is the property's identity: forty-seven rooms, each named for and dedicated to a different artist, with bespoke wall murals by contemporary Portuguese artists working from the named painter's vocabulary, and original works on every wall.

The room programme runs across three categories — Avantgarde Lake View, Avantgarde Lake View Premium, and the named Suites (Picasso, Klimt, Magritte, Pollock, Rothko among them) at 45 to 90 square metres. The river-facing categories all have private balconies; the Picasso Suite occupies the building's south corner with a wraparound balcony and a separate sitting room. Bathrooms are travertine; bath products are local Castelbel, sourced from the artisan soap-maker on Rua das Flores. The art programme rotates twice yearly, curated by gallerist Mário Sequeira, with selected works available for purchase — a deliberate choice that distinguishes the property from the heritage-palace alternatives in the centre.

Cozinha das Flores is the kitchen, opened in 2022 in partnership with chef Nuno Mendes — the Lisbon-born chef who held a Michelin star at Viajante in London from 2011 — bringing his Portuguese-Asian register to Porto. The restaurant has been Michelin-recommended (Bib Gourmand) since 2023 and is one of the most-reviewed kitchens in northern Portugal. The Digby Restaurant on the rooftop does the all-day terrace, named for the 17th-century English merchant Sir Kenelm Digby; the Klimt Bar in the basement runs the cocktail programme. The Spa Avantgarde with hammam, sauna and indoor pool, and the river-facing rooftop infinity pool, complete the wellness offering.

The Massarelos position is the bookable middle ground between the Yeatman across the river and Maison Albar in the centre — a 12-minute riverside walk to Ribeira through the Massarelos church and the funicular, an eight-minute walk uphill to the Crystal Palace, and a three-minute walk to the Casa Tait gardens. For art-fluent travellers wanting the contemporary-Portuguese-painter brief over the Belle-Époque-mansion brief, this is the strongest Porto five-star.

Best Occasion Fit

Honeymoon

Book the Picasso or Klimt Suite for the headline; private wine pairing at Cozinha das Flores; the rooftop infinity pool through the afternoon; the curator-led art tour through the property's collection as the in-house programme. The Massarelos position keeps the trip walkable to both the centre and the river-walk.

Solo Retreat

For the writing-and-walking solo Porto traveller, the Torel is the right boutique base — the art programme as the daily anchor, the Cozinha das Flores chef's counter as the dinner option, the Crystal Palace gardens uphill as the morning walk. The hotel handles solo dining at counter and table without ceremony.

Anniversary

A Porto milestone for art-collecting couples is unambiguously Torel — the Suites at 60 to 90 square metres, the curated art experience, and the Mendes kitchen at dinner. Private balcony breakfast facing the river is the staff's signature anniversary set-up.
