The Hotel

Lion Sands River Lodge is the More Family Collection's Sabi Sand flagship and the More family's longest-held property — Robert More acquired the original concession in 1933, and four generations of the family have operated continuously since. The Lion Sands portfolio now includes River Lodge (the eighteen-suite flagship reviewed here), Ivory Lodge (a higher-end nine-suite sister), Tinga Lodge (twelve suites in the Kruger National Park concession), and Narina Lodge (six suites, opened 2018). All four are on adjoining concessions that share traversing rights and a single ranger team.

River Lodge sits on a five-kilometre stretch of the Sabie River in the southern Sabi Sand and runs eighteen suites — a slightly larger footprint than the Sabi Sand operational norm, which keeps the rate card noticeably more accessible than Singita or Royal Malewane while preserving the same regional traversing rights and the same ranger-and-tracker game-drive standard. Each suite has a private deck, a plunge pool, and an outdoor shower; the river-frontage suites (Suites 1-9) are the most-requested with their direct Sabie River sightline. The Mhlosheni Honeymoon Suite, set apart from the main suite line, is the unit booked for milestone-occasion stays.

What gives Lion Sands its industry-defining position is the treehouse sleep-out programme. The original Chalkley Treehouse — set on a wooden platform 4 metres above the bush, with a four-poster bed, an open-air ensuite, and no walls beyond the platform railing — was the first safari treehouse in southern Africa when it opened in 2000, and the model that every other reserve has since copied. The Tinyeleti Treehouse and Kingston Treehouse followed; River Lodge guests can book a single sleep-out night as part of a longer stay, with the lodge ranger driving the in-bush dinner-and-breakfast service to the platform. The treehouses are not for first-night guests — the platform sits at the edge of an active leopard corridor and the sleep-out is the experiential highlight of the stay.

Game-drive operation runs the standard Sabi Sand format and the reserve's traversing rights cover the same Sabie River corridor that the Sabi Sand's leopard density makes globally famous. Dining is the More Family's hospitality signature — three-meal-a-day inclusive, the boma at the river bend, and the Pool Restaurant at sundowner hour. The lodge spa runs four treatment rooms with a focus on pre-game-drive and post-game-drive treatments rather than the wellness-retreat register that Londolozi has staked out. For a Sabi Sand honeymoon at a more accessible rate point than the Singita or Royal Malewane top-tier, a multi-generational family that wants the treehouse sleep-out as a child-of-twelve-and-up centrepiece, or a four-night first-safari trip that wants the river view and the operational reliability without the luxury-safari-flagship surcharge, Lion Sands River Lodge is the considered choice.

Best Occasion Fit

Honeymoon

The Mhlosheni Honeymoon Suite is the named honeymoon unit — set apart from the main suite line on the river, with a larger plunge pool, a separate sitting room, and a dedicated butler. Pair four nights at River Lodge with one night on the Chalkley Treehouse for a sleep-out that is, by some distance, the most-photographed safari setup in southern Africa. The lodge will arrange a private dinner on the river deck on the fourth night.

Family Holiday

Lion Sands operates one of the most-developed children's programmes in the Sabi Sand. Children twelve and up can join standard game drives; children six to eleven get a structured Cubs of the Sabi Sand programme run alongside the adult drives, with bush-walks suited to younger legs and a junior-ranger qualification at the end of the stay. The four-suite Family Suite configuration at River Lodge connects two two-bedroom suites and is the standard family-of-four-or-six unit. The treehouse sleep-out is for ages twelve and above only.

Book Lion Sands River Lodge

From ZAR 28,000/night all-inclusive at River Lodge; treehouse sleep-out ZAR 8,000-12,000 supplement per night. Lion Sands books three to four months ahead for July-October peak and two months for green season; treehouse sleep-out nights need at least four months' lead because the platform inventory is small and the units rotate across the wider More Family Collection booking demand.
