The Hotel

Belmond Casa de Sierra Nevada is the original San Miguel luxury property — Casa de Sierra Nevada was founded in 1971 by Peter Wirth, the Swiss-American hotelier who acquired the first colonial mansion at Hospicio 35 and converted it to a small luxury inn. Across the following 25 years, Wirth and his successors expanded the property by acquiring five additional adjacent 16th- and 17th-century colonial mansions on the same Hospicio-and-Pila Seca city block, restoring each to colonial-era specification, and connecting them through interior courtyards and walking passages. The property was acquired by Belmond in 2014 and rebranded Belmond Casa de Sierra Nevada — the only Belmond property in central Mexico (Belmond's broader Mexican portfolio is the Maroma Riviera Maya beach resort).
