The Hotel

Bishop's Lodge sits on a 317-acre estate in the Tesuque foothills ten minutes north of the Santa Fe Plaza — the original retreat property of Jean-Baptiste Lamy, the French-born first Archbishop of Santa Fe, who built the original chapel and farmhouse on the site in the 1850s and continued to use it as his personal retreat until his death in 1888. The Lamy chapel is preserved on the property and remains a registered historic site. The estate operated as a working dude ranch from 1918 (after the Pulitzer family acquired it from the Lamy estate) through to 2015, when Auberge Resorts Collection acquired the property and committed a six-year restoration that reopened 100 keys, three restaurants, the Spa Sage, the Skyfire restaurant, and the working horse stable in summer 2021.

The 100 keys are spread across the original ranch buildings (the Adobe Casitas, 32-sqm classic-Pueblo-Revival rooms with kiva fireplaces) plus a contemporary new-build addition (the 60-sqm and 90-sqm suites, designed by the Los Angeles architectural studio HKS to extend the original Pueblo-Revival vocabulary). The Lamy Suite — the property's milestone unit — is the original Archbishop's bedroom restored with the carved-Mexican furniture and the Lamy-era Stations of the Cross paintings preserved in place, plus a private outdoor terrace and a working kiva fireplace. The Casitas the Cottages, and the suites all hold the Auberge Resorts service signature.

Operationally Bishop's Lodge runs three full restaurants. Skyfire is the property's fine-dining flagship under Peter Hooper, running a Pueblo-Revival tasting menu that builds against the kitchen's New Mexican-Native produce sourcing — heirloom Hopi blue corn from the Tesuque Pueblo, Hatch green chile, and the property's own herb garden. The Plaza Bar is the all-day terrace overlooking the Tesuque foothills; the SkyTop is the cocktail bar with the Sangre de Cristo mountain sightline. The Spa Sage runs eight treatment rooms in a separate adobe pavilion with the structured Auberge wellness programme — sage-smudge body treatments, kiva-fire steam, and the only Watsu pool in northern New Mexico.

The structural distinction at Bishop's Lodge that sets it apart from the Plaza-block hotels is the family-resort scale at the rural-foothills register. The horse stable (working trail rides on 5,000 acres of Bureau of Land Management adjacent terrain), the children's Sage Adventures programme (ages 4-12), the two pools (a quiet adult pool and an active family pool), and the multi-bedroom Casita configurations make Bishop's Lodge the considered Santa Fe family-holiday answer — and the only Santa Fe property with infrastructure for a family-of-four-or-six booking. Free shuttle service runs every twenty minutes to and from the Plaza. For a family holiday that wants the Plaza-and-Canyon-Road days alongside the foothills mornings, a wellness retreat that takes the Spa Sage as the structural anchor, or an anniversary that wants the Auberge Resorts service signature applied at small-resort scale, Bishop's Lodge is the most-considered choice.

Best Occasion Fit

Family Holiday

Bishop's Lodge runs the only family-resort infrastructure in Santa Fe — the Sage Adventures children's programme (ages 4-12 with daily structure), the working horse stable (trail rides for ages 6+), the two-pool configuration (quiet adult pool, active family pool), and the multi-bedroom Casitas (two- and three-bedroom interconnecting). Multi-generational two-couple and family-of-six bookings are the standard configuration; the property runs the only family-friendly Santa Fe luxury option.

Wellness Retreat

Spa Sage is the most-developed wellness operation in northern New Mexico — eight treatment rooms in a dedicated adobe pavilion, the only Watsu pool in the region, the structured Auberge wellness programme (sage-smudge body treatments, kiva-fire steam, the seven-night Auberge Reset programme), and the daily yoga programme on the Skyfire terrace. The April-May and October-November shoulder windows are when Bishop's Lodge runs the most-considered wellness retreat programmes.
