About Shangri-La Singapore

Shangri-La Singapore opened on 6 May 1971 — the first Shangri-La anywhere in the world, the property the entire global hotel brand was built around, and the most influential single piece of garden-resort architecture in tropical Asia. The brief, given by Robert Kuok to the original Shangri-La management team, was to take a fifteen-acre slope of central Singapore real estate and treat it not as a city plot but as a tropical resort. Fifty-five years later, the result is still the city's most considered single piece of garden hospitality — a property that, despite sitting nine minutes by hotel limousine from Orchard Road's centre, feels like a forty-minute escape into rural tropical Asia.

There are 750 rooms across three connected wings. The Tower Wing — the 1971 original, refurbished in 2017 by Andre Fu — holds the larger room categories, including the Premier and Specialty Suites. The Garden Wing — the resort's most-loved building — has 134 rooms with private terraces overlooking the orchid gardens, every terrace a private balcony with planters of bougainvillea and frangipani. The Valley Wing, the resort's exclusive premium tier, has its own check-in, butler service, separate Valley Wing pool, and houses the resort's Presidential Suites. Visiting heads of state since the 1990s have stayed in the Valley Wing's 320-square-metre Presidential Suite.

The Lobby Lounge, in the Tower Wing, has been the city's most-considered afternoon-tea programme since 1971 — a 24-piece set served daily 14:00–18:00 with a string trio. Origin Grill, the resort's modern grill on the Tower Wing's lobby level, runs a precise Mediterranean-Asian menu. Shang Palace, the resort's Cantonese restaurant, holds a Michelin-guide nod and serves the most-considered Cantonese fine-dining in central Singapore outside the Marina district. The Line, the resort's all-day buffet, was the original international hotel-buffet template — serving 16 international live cooking stations daily and is, in 2026, still the city's most-attended Sunday family brunch.

What separates the Shangri-La Singapore, in 2026, is the deliberate continuity of its tropical-resort identity. The orchid gardens, planted in 1971 and now containing over 110,000 individual orchids, are tended by a permanent in-house team of 21 gardeners. The Valley Wing service signature — separate check-in, separate breakfast, separate pool — is the most-considered private hotel-within-a-hotel programme in the city. The CHI Spa, in the Garden Wing, runs the brand's most-considered traditional Chinese medicine programme. For an Orchard Road business stay that wants resort-level escape, a generational family stay built around the buffet at The Line, or an official-visit-grade celebration in the Valley Wing, this is the considered classical answer.

Best Occasion Fit

Business

Orchard Road is nine minutes by hotel limousine; the Marina Bay Financial Centre is twenty by Grab. The Valley Wing has its own separate check-in and butler service for heads-of-state-tier privacy. The Tower Wing business centre has eight private boardrooms; the Presidential Suite has its own dining-room boardroom for fourteen.

Family Holiday

Two connecting Garden Wing rooms with private terrace, the resort's Buds children's club (ages 4-12), and the three-tier garden swimming pool. The Sunday buffet at The Line is, for most kids, the highlight of a Singapore stay. The Singapore Botanic Gardens (a UNESCO World Heritage site) is six minutes' walk from the resort's south gate.

Anniversary

A Valley Wing Presidential Suite (the room visiting heads of state book) is the milestone celebration option. Brief the Valley Wing butler 96 hours ahead — they will arrange a private Shang Palace tasting menu in-suite, a string-trio Lobby Lounge afternoon tea, and a closing Valley Wing-pool buyout.
