The Hotel

Azulik opened in stages from 2003 onwards on the Tulum beach road, conceived by founder Eduardo Neira (Roth) as the antithesis of conventional resort luxury — and it became, somewhat improbably, the foundational text for what is now called 'Tulum style.' The forty-eight villas are hand-built treehouses constructed from local hardwoods, woven palm, and Mayan stonework, with no straight lines anywhere on the property. Many villas have no electricity in the rooms by design — candles only — and no WiFi in the rooms (it is available in shared lounges). The result is a deliberately analogue Tulum experience that, two decades later, feels increasingly radical.

The villa categories run from the entry-level Sky Villas (treehouses on stilts above the jungle canopy) to the Beach Villas with direct ocean access, and the Casitas — clustered villa-cluster bungalows. All have outdoor showers, hand-carved wooden bathtubs, deep canopied beds, and the curving organic architecture that has been Azulik's defining language since opening. The Mayan-stone walkway that curves through the property at dusk, lit only by candles, is one of the most photographed corridors in any luxury hotel.

Azulik runs Uh May, an arts-and-music programme that has hosted residencies by international DJs and visual artists; the IK LAB gallery on the property is one of Latin America's most architecturally striking small art spaces. The wellness programme is comprehensive: cenote ceremonies (the Mayan underground freshwater pools that the Yucatán is famous for), shamanic plant-medicine ceremonies (Temazcal sweat lodge), daily yoga at the Kin Toh treehouse pavilion, and bespoke energy-work sessions. The programming is rigorous; this is not a spa weekend.

Dining is the resort's celebrated Kin Toh restaurant — a treehouse pavilion serving modern Mayan cuisine with a tasting menu that has earned international restaurant-press attention, plus the Beach Tulum dining area for breakfast and lighter meals. The wine programme is small but curated; the mezcal programme is one of the better Mexican mezcal lists in the country. Service at Azulik is closer to a high-end bohemian commune than to a Marriott — the staff are part of the experience rather than invisible support — and that intentionality is the source of the resort's loyal returning guest base. Azulik is for travellers who want their luxury hotel to be a transformative environment rather than a comfortable one.

Best Occasion Fit

Honeymoon

The Tulum honeymoon for couples who want intentional disconnection. Book a Sky Villa for the canopied tree-house experience or a Beach Villa for direct ocean access. Ask Azulik to arrange a cenote ceremony at sunrise, a Temazcal sweat lodge, and a Kin Toh tasting menu dinner. The honeymoon at Azulik is the analogue, candle-lit, deeply ceremonial version — for couples who want a different kind of memory than the standard luxury beach honeymoon.

Anniversary

For anniversaries — particularly the kind that mark a real life shift — Azulik's bespoke ceremonial programming (Mayan blessing ceremony, plant-medicine work with on-site shamans, vow renewal at the cenote) is unlike any other luxury hotel anniversary stay. The resort handles these with the seriousness of practitioners rather than performers.

Wellness Retreat

Azulik's wellness programming is the deepest in Tulum. Multi-day yoga and plant-medicine retreats are bookable in advance with the resort's wellness team. The cenote ceremonies, daily group yoga, breathwork, sound healing, and the Temazcal are the resort's daily backbone. For travellers who want a transformative wellness intervention rather than a spa stay.
