Be Tulum opened in 2007 — making it one of the founding Tulum beach-road luxury hotels — under the direction of designers Sebastián Sas and Dolores Rovira, who effectively created what is now called the 'Tulum aesthetic': raw-wood architecture, palm-thatch roofs, deep wooden bathtubs, candlelight, hammocks on every terrace, and an integration with the beach and jungle that other Tulum hotels have spent fifteen years copying. The sixty-four suites are split between Jungle Suites (set in the dense vegetation behind the main resort area) and Beach Suites (with direct ocean views), all adults-only.
The Jungle Pool Suites — with private plunge pools set in the thick Tulum jungle — are the most-requested category and were the photograph that defined the entire Tulum hotel marketing genre on Instagram.
