Fifty-five villas and bungalows on a 12-hectare beachfront garden at Kendwa on the northwest coast — Czech-Zanzibari design partnership, Member of Design Hotels, and the deepest sustainability programme of any Zanzibar luxury property.
"Fifty-five Kendwa-beach villas in Czech-Zanzibari design partnership with the Czech firm Mooden — Member of Design Hotels since 2018, the only contemporary-design luxury hotel on the island, and the most coherent sustainability programme in the archipelago."
Zuri Zanzibar opened in 2018 on a 12-hectare beachfront garden at Kendwa, on the northwest coast of Unguja — the stretch of coastline where the Indian Ocean tide stays high enough to permit swimming throughout the day, in contrast to the dramatic east-coast tides that retreat half a kilometre at low water. The property is the result of a Czech-Zanzibari design partnership: Czech firm Mooden led the architecture and interior brief, working with Zanzibari craftspeople on the local material palette (carved makuti thatch, Zanzibari hardwood doors, Tinga-Tinga art commissions, kanga textiles), and the result was admitted to the Design Hotels collection at opening — still the only Zanzibar property in the membership.
Fifty-five villas and bungalows are spread across the property in five categories. Beach Bungalows (one bedroom, 65 sqm, second-row from the beach) are the entry-tier; Beach Villas (one bedroom, 95 sqm, beachfront) are the most-requested unit; the Family Villa runs two interconnecting bedrooms; the Pool Villa adds a private plunge; and the Honeymoon Villa is set on its own beach-frontage promontory with a private outdoor sala and rainfall-shower garden. All units have private outdoor showers and the bathroom is open-plan with the bedroom by design.
Sustainability is the structural register of the property rather than a marketing layer. The 12-hectare estate runs an organic farm with which the kitchen sources roughly 60% of vegetables, herbs, and fruit; the desalination plant runs on solar; the property holds the Travelife Gold sustainability certification (the only Zanzibar luxury hotel that does); and the Zuri-Maktaba programme is a standalone education partnership with the Kendwa village primary school that funds the school library and the digital-literacy programme — guests who want to volunteer for a half-day during their stay can book it through the front desk. The Upendo restaurant on the beachfront is the only beachfront fine-dining restaurant on the northwest coast and runs a five-course pescatarian menu that has been the most-recommended Kendwa-strip dining option since the property opened.
Operationally Zuri runs the design-hotel register through every touchpoint — the daily yoga programme on the beachfront sala (free for in-house guests), the Soko spa with seven treatment rooms and the only Watsu pool on the island, the dive centre that runs Mnemba Atoll dive trips three times a week (the same conservation reef andBeyond Mnemba operates), and the live-music-and-Zanzibari-storyteller programme three nights a week in the main pavilion. For a honeymoon that wants design as the register rather than colonial-Africana heritage, a wellness retreat that takes the yoga-spa-organic-food trio seriously, or a sustainability-conscious traveller who has reached the limit of resort greenwashing, Zuri is the most considered Zanzibar address.
The Honeymoon Villa is set apart from the main villa line on its own beach-frontage promontory with a private outdoor sala — the most-photographed honeymoon setup on the northwest coast. The hotel runs a structured honeymoon programme: a private yoga session for two on the sala, a private dhow sundowner cruise on the second night, and a beachfront private-dinner setup with the Upendo head chef on the third. Pair five nights here with two nights in Stone Town for the standard Zanzibar honeymoon arc.
Zuri runs the most coherent wellness operation on the island — daily complimentary yoga, the Watsu pool (the only one on Unguja), the seven-room Soko spa, an organic farm-to-table kitchen, and a structured wellness programme that runs seven nights with daily yoga, breath-work, and an Ayurvedic-focused menu. The November and April low-season weeks are when Zuri runs the deepest wellness retreat programming.
