Closed for a major renovation, reopening summer 2027. The 1954 family-run downtown lodge by the Silver Queen gondola.
"1954-founded family-run, 64 rooms, walking distance to Silver Queen gondola, the family-run heritage option."
Mountain Chalet Aspen is currently closed. The downtown lodge, opened in 1954 by Ralph Melville and run by the Melville family for some seventy years, was sold in 2021 and is now undergoing a roughly $100 million rebuild, with the owners announcing a grand opening planned for summer 2027. Until it reopens it cannot be booked, and the description below reflects the long-standing hotel rather than the renovated one, which will change. Historically the appeal for families was position and value: a 59-room, family-run lodge a short walk from the Silver Queen gondola at the base of Aspen Mountain, with a complimentary breakfast and a heated outdoor pool, at prices below the luxury houses in the centre of town. The renovation is expected to keep the downtown location while adding modernised rooms and new restaurant spaces. We will re-rate Mountain Chalet on the facts once it reopens. In the meantime, families wanting a downtown Aspen base should look at the alternatives on this list.
The hotel is closed until its planned summer 2027 reopening; room categories will be confirmed when it returns.
Mountain Chalet is closed for its rebuild until summer 2027. For a downtown Aspen base in the meantime, the other family options on this list are the place to start.
Mountain Chalet Aspen sits within our broader Top 20 Hotels in Aspen for a Family Holiday list. It scored an aggregate 9.2/10 across the three editorial criteria, competitive against the field but, on a family holiday-specific factors, the angle above is what earned its rank. Have firm dates? Our editor's advice is to book roughly twelve weeks in advance. Rooms with the coveted orientation are claimed first, while popular-month availability runs out months in advance. It is the terrace and plunge-pool suites, the rooms this rank rests on, that book up soonest.
A ranked shortlist, a special offer worth booking, and the overpriced stay to skip. Straight from the editors.
