Bambu Indah is the most-influential eco-wellness resort in Bali and it does not look like any other resort on the island. John and Cynthia Hardy bought the property in the 1990s and assembled it from twelve antique Javanese 'joglo' houses — each between 100 and 200 years old, transported to the site, and reassembled by traditional carpenters. The newer rooms are bamboo structures designed by Hardy's daughter, Elora, whose firm IBUKU has built much of the bamboo architecture in Bali over the last decade. The signature feature is the natural river swimming pool — a stone-lined pool fed by the Ayung tributary that runs through the property, with no chlorine, no pumps, just spring water. The kitchen is the Hardy-family's vegetable garden translated into a tasting menu. There is no air conditioning. There are no televisions. There are no phones in the rooms. Bambu Indah is the right pick for the wellness retreat that wants the genuine off-grid Bali experience — solar power, organic food, bamboo and wood architecture, no luxury-resort polish — and is willing to compromise on conventional comfort for it.
