What makes Anantara Siam special?

Start with the identity, because it is the single most confused fact in Bangkok hotel-keeping. Anantara Siam Bangkok is the former Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok on Ratchadamri. The building opened on 15 April 1983, began life under Peninsula management, traded for years as The Regent Bangkok, became Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok in 2003 after Four Seasons acquired Regent in 1992, and was re-flagged by Minor Hotel Group as Anantara Siam Bangkok Hotel on 1 March 2015. It is a completely different property from Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok at Chao Phraya River, which opened in 2020 on the water. Anyone telling you the Four Seasons moved is wrong: the flag changed, and a new Four Seasons was later built elsewhere. What that lineage bought is a grand hotel of a kind no longer built: a frescoed lobby with hand-painted silk murals and gold-leaf panels, an 814 sqm ballroom, and courtyards, gardens and a lotus pond in the middle of the Ratchaprasong shopping district. It sits on land gifted by King Rama VI, and the Two Bedroom Royal Suite is themed around his legacy.

Which room should you book?

With 354 rooms and suites, Anantara Siam is the largest hotel in this collection, and the range is correspondingly wide. Entry-level Deluxe Rooms start at 42 sqm, a comfortable size for a 1983 building, and the ladder runs up to the 344 sqm Anantara Presidential Suite and a 386 sqm two-bedroom version. The most interesting categories are not the biggest. Garden Terrace Rooms and Suites have their own private garden entrances and patios, so you step out into planting rather than a corridor, which is close to impossible anywhere else in central Bangkok. The 198 sqm Two Bedroom Jim Thompson Explorer Suite is themed around the silk trader's legacy, and the Two Bedroom Royal Suite around King Rama VI. Club guests use the Kasara Executive Lounge. The honest caveat is age: this is a 1983 property, substantially refurbished after the 2015 rebrand, and the hardware does not match the 2019 to 2025 openings elsewhere on this list.

Where should you eat and drink?

Anantara Siam has the deepest food and drink line-up on this list, and none of it holds a MICHELIN star. Biscotti is the Italian flagship and the hotel describes it as a MICHELIN guide-listed fine-dining restaurant, which is a listing and not a star; the distinction matters and we hold to it. Around it sit Spice Market for Thai, Shintaro for Japanese, Madison Steak Avenue for steak, and Guilty Bangkok for South American and Nikkei cooking with its own bar. Aqua pours cocktails beside the koi pond, The Terrace serves Mediterranean and Thai food by the pool, and The Lobby runs Mariage Freres afternoon tea under the frescoed ceiling. Mocha and Muffins handles the bakery and cafe trade, and the long-running Sunday Brunch is a Bangkok fixture in its own right. Nine venues in one hotel is unusual, and it is the reason guests here often eat in all week rather than booking out.

What is the spa and pool like?

Anantara Siam runs one of the most complete wellness offers in Bangkok, and it is spread across the gardens rather than stacked in a tower. The Anantara Spa has four single suites, two couples' suites and one deluxe couples' suite, several fitted with a private Roman-style tub or steam room, and it offers Biologique Recherche facials and poolside massage. The 25 metre outdoor pool sits on a terrace in the tropical gardens beside a lotus pond, which is a very different swim from a rooftop infinity edge. The 24-hour health club adds a gym, a yoga studio, squash courts and steam rooms, and there is a Truefitt and Hill barbershop and the Tara Salon on site. Spice Spoons Thai cooking classes and a kids' club round out a programme that works well for families.

Where is Anantara Siam, and how do you get there?

Anantara Siam sits directly next to BTS Ratchadamri, which is the practical reason to book it. The hotel's own walking times put the Erawan Shrine three minutes away, Gaysorn Village five, CentralwOrld eight, Lumpini Park ten, and both Siam Paragon and Central Embassy fifteen. That is the densest concentration of shopping, shrines and green space within walking distance of any hotel here, and in Bangkok's heat walkable is worth more than merely close. The grounds back onto the private golf course of the Royal Bangkok Sports Club, so the gardens borrow a rare stretch of open green. The weakness is everything beyond the neighbourhood. By the hotel's own figures the Chao Phraya is a 20 minute drive and the Grand Palace 20 minutes plus, Suvarnabhumi approximately 60 minutes and Don Mueang approximately 45. If your Bangkok is a river Bangkok, this is the wrong base. Ratchaprasong traffic is the reason those drives run long, so use the Skytrain wherever it goes.

What do guests consistently say?

Anantara Siam draws two distinct crowds, and that is the key to whether it suits you. The first is the returning loyalist, often someone who knew the building as the Regent or as the Four Seasons and comes back for the frescoed lobby, the gardens and the Mariage Freres afternoon tea rather than for anything new. The second is the event guest: with 354 rooms, an 814 sqm ballroom and a serious conference business, this hotel hosts weddings, galas and corporate functions at scale. The recurring praise is for the gardens, the staff and the sheer completeness of the place. The recurring criticism is that it can feel busy, that public areas fill when a function is running, and that the room hardware shows its age against the newest openings. Both readings are accurate. Ask what is booked into the ballroom on your dates before you commit to a quiet week.

Honest cons: who should skip it?

Three caveats, all of them structural rather than fixable. First, scale. At 354 rooms this is by far the largest hotel here, and it runs a serious banqueting and conference operation with a ballroom seating 700. Expect groups, name badges and full public areas at peak times; this is not an intimate property and does not pretend to be. Second, age. The building dates from 1983 and was substantially refurbished after the 2015 rebrand, but the hardware does not match what the 2019 to 2025 openings deliver, and guests arriving from the newest hotels notice it. Third, position. Ratchaprasong is superb for shopping and the Skytrain and poor for everything else: by the hotel's own figures the Chao Phraya is a 20 minute drive and the Grand Palace 20 minutes plus, in traffic that ranks among the worst in the city. That is a long way from the river Bangkok most visitors picture.
